Q&A with Otter.ai CEO Sam Liang on plans for personalized AI avatars for online meetings, recording all day, and more; Otter.ai claims to have nearly 20M users

Otter.ai has helped hundreds of millions …

Financial Times Elaine Moore

Context & Ripple Effects

Otter.ai has moved beyond transcription through meeting summaries and a home feed and then OtterPilot’s meeting-capture assistant. The new plans extend that progression from documenting meetings to representing or continuously observing work around them.

The avatar roadmap also arrives as meeting platforms pursue synthetic presence: Zoom had outlined photorealistic AI avatars for video calls. Otter’s nearly 20 million claimed users give its proposed expansion relevance beyond a niche transcription tool.

First-order effects

  • Otter.ai’s product scope would broaden from post-meeting notes and summaries to personalized meeting representation and continuous audio capture, if the plans reach product rollout.
  • Users would be asked to place more of their meetings and potentially their workday’s conversations inside Otter’s capture and assistant layer.

Second-order effects

  • Zoom and other collaboration platforms face added pressure to make their own AI presence, capture, and follow-up tools work as an integrated experience rather than isolated meeting features.
  • Continuous recording raises the operational importance of participant notice, consent controls, retention settings, and clear boundaries between work documentation and private conversation.

Third-order effects

  • If these capabilities become standard, the meeting assistant may evolve into an ambient workplace record that can act on a user’s behalf, shifting competition toward ownership of context and workflow integration.
  • The same shift is likely to make trust and data-governance design a product differentiator, especially as AI tools collect more persistent workplace signals.

The trend: Meeting transcription products are becoming ambient, workflow-native AI layers that capture context continuously and increasingly represent users in collaborative work.

Discussion

Why is everyone trying to make ai avatars for meeting!ms!?  Just don't have the meetings!

Surely all the great free products using Whisper must be taking a bite out of their business.  Use to use Otter, but felt too much like enterprise BS pricing plans.
