I wonder whether regulators would pursue such an anti-monopoly case in the Trump administration?  Or how courts would view the appeal?  —  “Google must sell Chrome to end search monopoly, justice department argues in court filing”  —  https://www.theguardian.com/ ...

The DOJ's remedies for Google's search monopoly are drastic and will reshape the internet:  —  • Google must sell Chrome.  —  • Android can't promote Google Search.  —  • No default search deals (costing Apple $20B/year).  —  • Must license search index data to rivals. …

Revenue sharing for search default and/or preferential treatment - dead.  Google's tens of billions to Apple - dead (last I saw it's about 15% of Apple's profits).  Reminder, this all needs to be argued and approved by Court and then will get appealed.  Still far off.  /3 [image]

As it relates to Android, here is how DOJ has set it up.  Forced divestiture would be option that swiftly, efficiently, and decisively strikes at the locus of some  —  anticompetitive conduct at issue here" but we're ok with tight behavioral remedies with option to divest if they…

US regulators seek to break up Google, forcing Chrome sale as part of monopoly punishment

Tech people being like “this structural breakup of Google won't work and isn't worth it” is so funny  —  My dudes you roll out huge changes to your products that don't work all the time

Yep, selling Chrome would hurt the education market (Chromebooks!) and potentially ruin the browser market which is largely built on Chromium.  —  Google maintains Chromium partly to dodge competition concerns around Chrome 🤷‍♂️ [embedded post]

Or, it would be good actually so that one company doesn't control 90% of the internet  —  Especially when it's as evil as alphabet is

I don't see how this could work.  Who would download Chrome if it's not integrated with Google services?  And a Chromebook?  They're effectively shutting it down + Firefox too, since they depend financially on Google.  [embedded post]
  • @mgsiegler.com M.G. Siegler on bluesky
If Chrome is owned by someone else, is Google allowed to have *any* browser option that they do own?  Even on Android?  Would they have to use just a generic, open-source browser?  The best of those are built on Chromium.  Maybe they could build one and call it ‘Chrome 2’?
  • @eddums.bsky.social Eddie on bluesky
And so stupid because there's plenty of other browser alternatives: Edge, Safari, DuckDuckGo, Tor, Firefox, and probably more I can't think of right now.  Chrome just does it the best.  It's not a monopoly it's the chosen browser.
  • @modestproposal1 @modestproposal1 on x
I realize I have been, and remain, in the minority on this, but I don't see how you read this any other way than DOJ wants Apple to enter the search business, can't force them to since they are not party to the suit, so are seeking remedies that among other things draw them in. […

Just read DOJ's proposed Google's remedies. They go so far beyond the scope of the verdict that the only way to read them is as a Hail Mary vehicle for any company unhappy with Google. They are like amputating your arms and legs because of a hangnail. https://x.com/...

Bam.  There is it.  US Department of Justice has filed - requesting divestiture of Chrome as a remedy for court's finding against Google.  Android at risk, too.  /1 [image]
