“All of these men are now hopelessly trapped in a problem their own platforms and algorithms created.”

The Verge Editor-In-Chief @reckless1280 doesn't pull punches on Elon Musk and Donald Trump's Big Tech enablers:  —  “America now has an unelected defense contractor sitting in the White House doing ketamine and twiddling the algorithmic knobs of an influential right-wing echo cha…

This is completely right from @reckless.bsky.social and more should be saying it.  The *worst possible outcome* is that you over-prepare for a nightmare scenario that never comes to pass.  The most realistic outcome, unfortunately, is that it does.  —  www.status.news/p/nilay-pat…

also, as @futureofmusic.bsky.social notes, yeah, not a single mention of Carr's broad support for stripping away what remains of media consolidation limits  —  that's curiously not of interest to a consolidated media either

you'd think, were you a journalist paid to inform readers, you could work in a mention that Carr is the exact opposite of the “populist” leadership Trumpists deluded themselves into voting for.  A status quo captured regulator whose primary function is to coddle telecom monopolie…

lots of quotes from Republicans propping up the false “censorship” narratives.  Lots of talk about whether or not he can regulate tech.  Even one quote calling him a super talented politician.  —  nary a reference to the fact his PRIMARY GOAL will be to take a hatchet to consumer…

Blatant financial corruption like this is a good thing to highlight publicly, and to never accept as okay.  —  They control the state, so they'll succeed at some of this.  But that doesn't mean they'll succeed with all, nor that we should accept it.  And a lot of the public reall…

We must dismantle the censorship cartel and restore free speech rights for everyday Americans.

This blog post was designed to lay the groundwork for Carr's stated plan as FCC chair: revive the first Trump Administration's proposed rule to narrow 230. Again, we know this because Carr's Project 2025 chapter cited the blog post in a footnote: https://static.project2025.org/ .…

Congrats, @BrendanCarrFCC! Carr had a persuasive dissent on the FCC's ill-advised proposed “Disclosure Rules for the Use of AI in Political Ads.” I look forward to having that intellectual firepower setting the FCC agenda.
  • @adamkovac Adam Kovacevich on x
    1. Carr wrote in Project 2025 that FCC should issue an order “reinterpreting” (narrowing) 230. In the final year of Trump's first term, Trump NTIA officials Nathan Simington and Adam Candeub tried to start such a rulemaking to weaken Section 230. 2/ [image]

Gatekeeer censorship and chilling of speech is very real.  Apple tried to silence me and ban my company, Epic Games, from competing with Apple under Europe's Digital Markets Act on account of my speech criticizing Apple and their practices.  Who stepped up and stopped this?  Not …
  • @adamkovac Adam Kovacevich on x
    2. Carr proposed to narrow the scope of Section 230 in order to “limit the number of cases in which a platform can censor with the benefit of Section 230's protections.” In other words, it's an attack on content moderation. https://static.project2025.org/ ... 5/ [image]
  • @adamkovac Adam Kovacevich on x
    3. Carr wants to scrap 230 and replace it with laws like TX's law banning content moderation. Of course, SCOTUS said clearly in Netchoice v. Paxton that TX can't handcuff private companies' content moderation choices. 7/ [image]
  • @adamkovac Adam Kovacevich on x
I realize that Section 230 has been a political punching bag. But Dems should remember that 230 incentivizes and helps protect content moderation. 230 makes the Internet possible. That is *why* MAGA is going after 230. And that's why Dems should stand up to protect it. 10/
  • @adamkovac Adam Kovacevich on x
You might think: the FCC has nothing to do with Section 230. 230 is a matter for the courts. But two weeks before Biden beat Trump in the 2020 election, FCC Chair Ajit Pai's General Counsel published a blog post arguing for FCC authority over 230: https://www.fcc.gov/... 3/ [imag…

American freedom of speech will exist in name only if private monopolies have free rein to censor or shadowban the opinions of Americans they dislike or disagree with.Painting @BrendanCarrFCC or anybody as opposing “content moderation” is misleading and dishonest...
  • @adamkovac Adam Kovacevich on x
230 protects the rights of platforms to moderate offensive, harassing speech, and hate speech. Section 230 makes the Internet better - and weakening it won't hurt FB or Google, but instead hurt all Internet users. https://insidesources.com/... 6/
  • @matthewkeyslive Matthew Keys on x
Carr has affirmed support to impose cable-like carriage rules on streaming services like Fubo and YouTube TV. This will cause higher fees and programming-related blackouts on these services, which are already common on cable and satellite platforms. Remember this tweet. $FUBO
  • @adamkovac Adam Kovacevich on x
    5. Carr wants to “empower” consumers to “choose their own content filters and fact checkers.” Of course, consumers already do choose their own content and news sources. That's conservatives have flocked to Rumble and Truth Social (which also rely on 230's protection BTW). 9/ [ima…

@adamkovac @BrendanCarrFCC Apple threatened to block Twitter from iOS. Apple and Google have blocked multiple social media apps on account of not liking the lawful speech they allowed, and Apple has gone through multiple purges of privacy apps in Russia. https://www.cnn.com/...

This is just ridiculous: the ‘DOGE’ account has a gray verified checkmark denoting it as an ‘official government account’ even though there is currently no such government entity. Emblematic of how much this platform has turned into state-run media for Trump. [image]
  • @adamkovac Adam Kovacevich on x
    4. Carr wants to amend Section 230 to mandate appeals processes for content removals - and allow the FCC to prosecute companies over their content removals. This was part of the FL and TX laws that were enjoined because they ran into a 1st Amendment buzzsaw. 8/ [image]
  • @shortlawyer @shortlawyer on x
Fact checking is free speech. Removal of speech a private organization's wishes to not be associated with is free speech. Using the FCC to thwart a private organization's wish to not be associated with speech is not free speech.
