Emails from Musk's lawsuit against OpenAI show Brockman and Sutskever had concerns about Altman as early as 2017, Sam Altman considered an ICO, and more
New emails released as part of Elon Musk's lawsuit against OpenAI reveal that the company's fondness of drama is hardly new.

Context & Ripple Effects
Musk's revived complaint against OpenAI put the lab's founding commitments and governance at the center of a public dispute. The released correspondence adds contemporaneous detail to that case, including early founder tensions and discussion of potential financing paths.
The emails give Musk's litigation a newly public record of Brockman and Sutskever's early concerns about Altman, increasing scrutiny of the founders' internal alignment.
Altman's reported consideration of an ICO brings an early, alternative funding idea into view, alongside the dispute over how OpenAI should be financed and controlled.
Second-order effects
OpenAI and the individual founders face a more document-driven public narrative, as each newly released exchange can be read against competing accounts of the organization's founding purpose.
The disclosures sharpen attention on the trade-off between investor capital, founder control, and mission governance—a tension also visible in Microsoft's deliberations over backing OpenAI.
Third-order effects
If litigation continues to surface internal records, governance histories may become a durable reputational and negotiating asset for major AI labs, not merely a private corporate matter.
The episode points to AI-lab financing becoming inseparable from governance design: capital structures can determine who controls a lab and how credibly it can claim mission constraints.
The trend: The fight illustrates the financialization of frontier AI labs, where funding mechanisms and voting rights increasingly shape governance legitimacy.
NEW: A batch of newly released emails show a long history of mistrust between Sam Altman, Greg Brockman, Ilya Sutskever and Elon Musk. — Brockman and Sutsekever worried about Musk becoming a dictator, which feels ... relevant. [image]
I compiled all the emails released as part of the Musk v. Altman lawsuit in chronological order (link in reply). IMO a really valuable read. Extremely consequential decisions made in these emails. [image]
My respect for Ilya has increased even more after reading this. It seems Ilya was one of only person in OpenAI who saw the implications of AGI and the potential that OpenAI might succeed in doing so. All his points mentioned are so valid. Really visionary
Sam was running YC. Sam used YC to create a research program to fund OAI. Sam also used Elon to fund OAI, then abandoned nonprofit - burning him and “the public,” who were meant to “own the tech.” honest opinion.
So Sam Altman felt butthurt because the e-mails of him being a snakey charlatan re-emerged in the public consciousness so he tries to take a shot at Grok and Elon by explicitly lying in a way that can be easily be disproven and ends up shooting himself in the foot? That tracks.
NEW: A batch of newly released emails show a long history of mistrust between Sam Altman, Greg Brockman, Ilya Sutskever and Elon Musk. In a 2017 email signed by both Brockman and Sutsekever, the two said that they “haven't been able to fully trust [Altman's] judgements [image]
Ilya to Sam Altman: “we haven't been able to fully trust your judgments because we don't understand your cost function... We don't understand why the CEO title is so important to you... Is AGI truly your primary motivation”
