Amazon is shutting down Freevee, its free, ad-supported streaming service launched in 2019 under the IMDb brand, and plans to move the content to Prime Video
Amazon is officially shutting down Freevee, its free, ad-supported video streaming service originally launched under the IMDb brand nearly five years ago.
Closing the standalone brand reverses that product separation: Amazon is retaining the content but placing it inside Prime Video, making the distribution experience—not the catalog itself—the central change.
First-order effects
Freevee viewers and its programming shift to Prime Video, ending Freevee as a distinct destination and brand.
Prime Video becomes Amazon’s single consumer-facing home for the Freevee catalog, consolidating the company’s video product surface.
Second-order effects
The move reduces Amazon’s need to maintain separate discovery, marketing, and product operations for a free service, while making Prime Video’s interface responsible for serving both audiences.
Content partners and advertisers associated with Freevee will have to operate through Prime Video’s distribution and advertising environment rather than a dedicated Freevee service.
Third-order effects
If similar consolidations continue, streaming operators may favor fewer consumer brands with multiple access and monetization paths over standalone free-video apps.
The durable competitive question shifts from launching another free catalog to whether a unified service can preserve clear discovery and value for viewers across different viewing models.
The trend: Streaming platforms are consolidating formerly separate free-video offerings into larger flagship services to simplify distribution and concentrate audience engagement.
Call it the Tubi effect. Consolidation of Freevee into Prime is evidence of a new embrace, rather than a segmentation of, ad-supported tiers in lieu of less-lucrative ad-free monthly subscription models. Case-in-point: Disney and Netflix. Expect the consolidation to continue.
No layoffs related to the move are expected. As part of previous restructurings, Freevee's content team already had been integrated into Amazon MGM Studios; its business team has been part of Prime Video https://deadline.com/...
RIP imdbTV, one of the better streaming opportunities that was ruined by corporate greed from the jump (like most of “streaming services” are or will be)
The update will be deployed in the territories where Freevee is currently available, the U.S., UK, Germany and Austria. Going forward, the content currently labeled as Freevee will be designated for non-Prime customers as “Watch for Free” on detail pages https://deadline.com/...
A second Amazon video brand never made sense, and it was their decision to launch it. Hulu also makes no sense as a separate Disney marketed SVOD brand/ app, and Disney's in the process of “fixing” that.
