Wow. Waymo going big. I can attest rides are pretty smooth :-) This level of investment hopefully means the unit economics are convincing enough to start scaling dramatically.

Waymo is really taking off now (in the US), this is great! And slowly but surely moving to more seasonal weather zones, as opposed to the current always-sunny ones. Kudos to the team. [image]

@fdellaert Waymo is incredible, I was blown away when I finally went to SF. Supposedly the unit economics were already barely positive (just for vehicles)

Our Waymo team is so appreciative of the continued support and vote of confidence from Alphabet and all of our investors as we accelerate our AI-first technological development and continue to safely scale our service in increasingly challenging environments.

Waymo is now doing 100,000 robotaxi paid trips per week. That's 10x growth from last year Slowly (for a decade) then suddenly:

“While AI is only just beginning to capture the public imagination, @Waymo has been working to bring its endless possibilities to the world of physical transportation for years. The Waymo Driver leads in earning trust by safely actualizing the value and potential of AI through

love waymo as a rider. love it even more as a cyclist who lives in fears of drunk, sleepy, speeding, texting drivers.

I'm biased but it's hard for me to imagine a world where Waymo is not a trillion dollar company. It will obviously take its time and continued amazing execution but going by the Copernican principle it's very likely they will continue to execute well after 15 years of leadership!

10x y/y growth for Waymo 🤯 The willingness by Google to be patient for *decades* to see this bet through is so impressive.

I do think a software licensing business to OEMs is a logical next step for Waymo eventually. I would love to own a car with Waymo's tech. Sometimes I may drive it. Other times I may just sit in the back and work or sleep.

quick question, if Waymo is such a slam dunk why is google letting everyone else get a piece, why are they acting like they dont have 100 BILLION in cash on hand

So @Waymo just closed a $5.6 billion funding round to expand its robotaxi fleet? They will need folks in new cities to get comfortable with the idea of riding in an AI-powered driverless car, as I reported last week: https://fortune.com/...
  • @kylebrussell Kyle Russell on x
ok it took longer than 5-10 years but it's wild that self-driving fleets are really deploying to basically all major US cities before the decade is out
