Amazon says Apple TV+ will be available as a $9.99/month subscription add-on in Prime Video Channels later this month in the US, joining 100+ streaming services

Apple will begin selling TV+ subscriptions through Prime later this month, Mike Hopkins, senior vice president of Amazon Prime Video

Bloomberg

Context & Ripple Effects

Apple TV+ began as a direct subscription service with a low launch price and a device-purchase trial, following its 2019 launch in more than 100 countries. The Prime Video Channels listing marks a shift from relying solely on Apple-controlled distribution toward an additional subscription storefront.

Apple had already used channel bundling on its own platform, offering CBS All Access and Showtime to TV+ subscribers in 2020 through Apple TV Channels bundles. This move reverses the direction of aggregation: Apple’s service now becomes part of Amazon’s larger channel marketplace.

First-order effects

  • US Prime Video Channels users will be able to add Apple TV+ at $9.99 per month within Amazon’s streaming-service lineup, giving Apple another customer-acquisition and subscription-management surface.
  • Amazon expands the selection of services available through Prime Video Channels, while Apple trades some direct control of the subscriber relationship for access to Amazon’s channel-discovery environment.

Second-order effects

  • Other streaming services and channel marketplaces face added pressure to compete for placement, discovery, and a simpler path to subscribing across multiple services.
  • The arrangement makes aggregation more valuable for viewers managing several paid services, but can make the underlying providers less visible as standalone destinations.

Third-order effects

  • If major services continue joining rivals’ marketplaces, streaming competition may increasingly center on who owns discovery, billing, and the viewing interface rather than only on exclusive catalogs.
  • The long-run balance remains uncertain: providers can gain reach through aggregators while risking weaker direct customer relationships and less control over promotion and data.

The trend: Streaming is moving from isolated direct-to-consumer apps toward interoperable subscription marketplaces that compete to own the customer interface.

Apple has struck a deal to make Apple TV+ available via the Amazon channels store. For the first time, you won't need to use the Apple TV app to get Apple TV+ shows. What's next: Cats and dogs living together in peace? [image]

@Reuters This is misleading AF. You will be able to go to Amazon Prime and subscribe (separately) to Apple TV for $9.99/month. It's not included in your Amazon Prime membership. Not any big deal. Again, misleading AF.
