BleepingComputer reports that hackers have obtained a copy of the Internet Archive's authentication database, including 31 million unique email addresses, along with “screen names, password change timestamps, Bcrypt-hashed passwords, and other internal data.” …

I'm a big fan of the @internetarchive but it does not appear they handled this security breach well... https://www.bleepingcomputer.com/ ... learned about this via haveibeenpwned, that's not how it should go.

What we know: DDOS attack-fended off for now; defacement of our website via JS library; breach of usernames/email/salted-encrypted passwords. What we've done: Disabled the JS library, scrubbing systems, upgrading security. Will share more as we know it.

@haveibeenpwned Let me share more on the chronology of this: 30 Sep: Someone sends me the breach, but I'm travelling and didn't realise the significance 5 Oct: I get a chance to look at it - whoa! 6 Oct: I get in contact with someone at IA and send the data, advising it's our goa…

@Vestboy_Myst They are under attack because the archive belongs to the USA, and as we all know, this horrendous and hypocritical government supports the genocide that is being carried out by the terrorist state of “Israel”.
  • @troyhunt Troy Hunt on x
Hi folks, yes, I'm aware of this. I've been in communication with the Internet Archive over the last few days re the data breach, didn't know the site was defaced until people started flagging it with me just now. More soon.

If the Internet Archive itself is meaningfully damaged after this hack, this will be a significant loss to the public knowledge commons - a modern day burning of a library. https://www.theverge.com/...

Some asshat hacked the Internet Archive thinking it's a government website. (It's not. “.org” = nonprofit.) If you have an account, read on. https://www.bleepingcomputer.com/ ...

Internet Archive is seriously one of those sites that we shouldn't be trying to hack or take down
  • @aldanmarki @aldanmarki on x
Are you fucking insane. For those unaware, these hackers have taken down the Internet Archive based on the completely false assumption that it's part of the U.S. federal government, believing that their actions somehow support Palestine.

The internet's history is kept by a relatively small organisation on a shoestring budget - and it looks like it's been the victim not just of DDoS but a potentially major breach too. Surely given the billions in tech, big orgs could contribute to fund it properly?

You motherfucker. Internet Archive was one of the best, most resourceful sites of the entire history of the Internet. You literally could've hacked into any corrupt site, or government official, but instead you do the online equivalent of nuking a museum. Truly despicable.

you gotta be such a lowlife to target the fucking Internet Archive of all things. huge loser behavior
  • @leo_puglisi6 Leonardo Puglisi on x
this group has taken down the Internet Archive - genuinely one of the most important sites in the world - because...something something US and Israel?? attacking a non-profit will not stop anything happening in Gaza

Note: Final update and confirmations: The compromise has been confirmed via @BleepinComputer and @TroyHunt. 31,000,000 users impacted. There is no confirmed information on how the site was compromised. No Threat Actor(s) have been attributed to the compromise. More

As I said for over 3 decades and few cared to understand: We are moving from the Information Age to the Amnesia Age. The Internet Archive has been attacked and the aim is to delete it. DO YOU HEAR ME NOW. Any large ethical AI company that does not come to aid—is worthless. [image…
