BREAKING NEWS The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences has decided to award the 2024 #NobelPrize in Physics to John J. Hopfield and Geoffrey E. Hinton “for foundational discoveries and inventions that enable machine learning with artificial neural networks.” [image]

I will reframe robotics as *deep physical computation* from now on ☺️ Congrats to the 2nd laureate of both Turing Award and Nobel Prize! I just looked it up and the first was Herbert A. Simon, who won the Economics category.

The 2024 #NobelPrize laureates in physics used tools from physics to construct methods that helped lay the foundation for today's powerful machine learning. John Hopfield created a structure that can store and reconstruct information. Geoffrey Hinton invented a method that can [i…

Geoffrey Hinton, who left Google to warn about the danger AI poses to humanity and thinks there's a 50-50 chance AI will kill everyone, has received the 2024 Nobel Prize in physics.

John Hopfield and Geoff Hinton have won the 2024 Nobel prize in physics. Hinton is now (to my knowledge) the first person to win both the Turing award and Nobel prize: https://x.com/...

Congrats ⁦@geoffreyhinton⁩ and John Hopfield on the 2024 Nobel Prize in physics! 🎉🥳 Your remarkable work has helped demonstrate that intelligence is a physical process - ultimately the most powerful one in our universe. [image]

Congrats to @geoffreyhinton + Hopfield for their pioneering work in artificial neural networks! As luck would have it, last week I released my conversation with Jay McClelland who discussed the story of how Hinton, Rumelhart, and others developed backprop: https://www.youtube.com…

Quite the #nobel speech from Geoffrey Hinton. Thanks for the prize, sorry about the apocalypse. “In the same circumstance I would do the same again, but I do worry that the overall consequence of this might be systems more intelligent than us that eventually take control.”

This year's #NobelPrize laureate in physics John Hopfield created an associative memory that can store and reconstruct images and other types of patterns in data. The Hopfield network can store patterns and has a method for recreating them. When the network is given an [image]

Interesting choice for the Nobel Prize for Physics. Hopfield was long overdue. Striking that it's Hinton alone for deep learning. I recently spoke to someone from the Nobel committee, so know how much effort they put into getting the right people. https://www.nobelprize.org/...

I always found that physicists made great data scientist and ML people. Reason is they have to deal with data at scale. But now this moves to next step. Physics Nobel prize goes to ML people.

This is a bit of a dark horse — had not seen them in any of the sweepstakes ahead of the announcement. But if everything is either physics or stamp collecting we just promoted machine learning to “physics”. (Lovely overlaps with statistical mechanics, too)
