Google ramps up efforts to integrate AI across its products in India, where it has 700M to 800M users, including launching Gemini Live in nine Indian languages
Google is ramping up its artificial intelligence efforts in India to integrate AI across its products for Indians …

Context & Ripple Effects
Google’s India AI push builds on a localization track: it had already been adding Indian languages to its services and pursuing a model for broad speech-and-text language coverage, then launched the Gemini Android app with support for English and nine other languages in India. Google’s earlier Indian-language model work made this product-level rollout more actionable.
Making Gemini Live available in nine Indian languages extends that effort from app access to a conversational interface across Google’s much larger product footprint. The scale of Google’s stated Indian user base makes India a consequential test of whether language localization can turn AI availability into routine use.
First-order effects
Indian users who prefer one of the nine supported languages can use Gemini Live in that language, reducing a direct language barrier to Google’s conversational AI.
Other AI providers and consumer platforms serving India face stronger pressure to match vernacular conversational support, not merely offer an English-language assistant.
Localization becomes more central to product competition: language coverage, speech quality and integration into existing Google services can matter alongside underlying model capability.
Third-order effects
If these integrations drive repeat use, India can become a key proving ground for AI distribution through established consumer platforms, where product reach and local-language adaptation reinforce each other.
The pattern points toward more ambient, embedded assistants rather than AI remaining a separate destination; the extent of that shift will depend on sustained usefulness across languages and products.
The trend: This is one data point in the shift from standalone AI apps toward locally adapted assistants distributed through existing mass-market products.
