This closes a loop Facebook opened in stages this year. In April, WhatsApp switched on end-to-end encryption by default for its billion-plus users, creating the largest encrypted messaging network in history; three months later Facebook began quietly testing opt-in encryption inside Messenger.

Secret Conversations finishing its rollout to all 900M+ users means the experiment graduated into product: encrypted chats visible on only one device per end, with optional self-destruct timers. It matters because Facebook is now running two very different privacy models side by side — default encryption at WhatsApp, opt-in encryption at Messenger.

First-order effects

  • Every Messenger user can now start a Secret Conversation, trading multi-device sync for single-device security and setting messages to self-destruct.
  • Content in those threads is unreadable to Facebook's own servers, carving an exception out of the data pipeline that powers the rest of Messenger.

Second-order effects

  • Rival messaging apps face a raised baseline: with WhatsApp encrypted by default and Messenger offering it opt-in, unencrypted chat becomes a marketable disadvantage rather than the norm.
