One for the European defence and security nerds: the loudest celebrations at Breton not staying on as an EU commissioner might come from across Brussels in NATO HQ. Breton was EU protectionist-in-chief when it came to arms procurement and really annoyed people doing it for NATO.

Breton being out is good, but this was likely more about von der Leyen getting rid of a threat. Breton's ego left him exposed. The Commission is a clown show. Breton's replacement isn't likely to be better.

Wow. The President of the EU, Ursula Von der Leyen, bribing a member state with a more important commissioner role, if they get rid of a nominee that she doesn't like? What an accusation. What corruption. You glad we left yet? #ThanksBrexit

It's always sad to see someone lose their job but this is for the best. Breton turned regulation making into a personal soap opera, targeting @elonmusk unfairly. His legacy will not be positive - Europe has no big tech left.

it's funny that it took a resignation announcement for Breton to finally stop posting photos of himself with every post here. 😂 Anyway, good riddance to one of the most anti-innovation, anti-free speech bureaucrats the modern world has ever seen.

Bad news for FR & EU. Breton's first mandate was objective success despite frictions w/VDL. Political fragmentation in FR will make designation of next Cssr a puzzle. Legitimacy questions on portfolio & (possible) EVP status. Lastly: will Paris follow Sofia and propose 2 names ?

After the Draghi report that had the very obvious blessing of Von der Leyen, it seems that this is really not about policy but about the fact that politics is a team sport. And that there are limits to which you can piss off the coach before she looks for other players.

From a personal standpoint, losing your job is no laughing matter. However, given Mario Draghi's warning about the EU's tendency to over-regulate and stifle SMEs, it's not exactly a surprise. Last week I wrote that Ursula von der Leyen should re-evaluate Breton's role as a

And who says EU politics is boring?! Breton publicly throws a tantrum and resigns immediately for being pulled as the candidate for commissioner, saying President von der Leyen asked France to withdrawn his name. He claims she'd offered France a juicier portfolio to do so.
