Coinbase launches its wrapped bitcoin, cbBTC, on the Ethereum and Base networks, supported by various DeFi services for trading, lending, and as collateral

The token will initially be offered on Ethereum and Coinbase's Base networks, with plans to expand to more blockchains in the coming months.

Context & Ripple Effects

Bitcoin had already been made usable in Ethereum applications through a one-to-one Bitcoin-backed ERC-20 token. Coinbase is now adding its own version to the same application environment rather than relying solely on an established wrapped-Bitcoin route.

The launch also extends the utility of Base, which opened with more than 100 dApps and service providers in its ecosystem. Making cbBTC available on both Ethereum and Base gives Coinbase a shared asset layer across its exchange-linked networks.

First-order effects

  • DeFi services on Ethereum and Base can immediately list cbBTC for trading, lending, and collateral, giving users a new Bitcoin-backed token option.
  • Coinbase gains direct control over the wrapped-Bitcoin product it distributes on the two launch networks, with expansion to additional chains planned.

Second-order effects

  • Existing wrapped-Bitcoin issuers and the DeFi venues that support them face a new competing asset whose distribution is tied to Coinbase and Base.
  • Protocols must decide whether to add cbBTC liquidity and collateral markets, potentially dividing Bitcoin-backed liquidity across multiple wrapped-token formats.

Third-order effects

  • If major exchanges increasingly issue their own cross-chain Bitcoin representations, wrapped Bitcoin may shift from a product led by specialist custodians toward a competition over issuer trust, distribution, and DeFi integrations.
  • That fragmentation could make collateral portability and risk assessment more important for DeFi users and protocols, because tokens with the same Bitcoin backing can carry different issuer and redemption dependencies.

The trend: The launch is part of a broader move by crypto platforms to turn custody and distribution into chain-native, composable assets for DeFi ecosystems.
