Sources: Meta plans to release a new MR device codenamed Puffin in 2027, resembling a bulky pair of glasses with a second unit for battery and computing power
Report Scott Hayden / Road to VR : Meta Reportedly Considering Smaller Mixed Reality “Glasses” for Release in 2027 Sarah Fields / Game Rant : Meta is Reportedly Working on a Super-Light Mixed Reality Headset Threads: David Heaney / @heaney_555 : My thoughts (entirely speculation): - Quest Air? Or perhaps not branded Quest at all? - Maybe it uses a stripped down version of Horizon OS that only supports 2D panels and spatial apps made with Meta's upcoming framework, not traditional immersive apps. X: David Heaney / @heaney555 : Further, I'm skeptical about the claimed weight. “Less than 110 grams” would be lighter than a Bigscreen Beyond! And keep in mind it would have passthrough cameras, tracking cameras, probably a depth sensor of some kind, and likely a chip to process these on-headset. Luna / @lunayian : Pretty skeptical we'd see something like this leave the lab given Boz's comments from as recently as last month. I do feel there is a place for a product like this as a mid-tier between AR glasses and high-end MR HMDs though. External architectures are too clunky otherwise. Luna / @lunayian : IMO it probably could work if positioned as a “Meta Quest Air” rather than “Pro” with a focus on viewing and industrial use cases. The battery/compute pack **must** fit in the user's pocket though. Luna / @lunayian : *Double Speculation* - Meta Quest 4/4S: Broad AR/VR, LCD/QLED, >FoV, MR, eye-tracking, controllers, gaming, fitness. AIO form factor. - Meta Quest Air: High-end AR/VR, uOLED, <FoV, MR, eye-tracking, face-tracking, only 2D/Volumetric apps, remote displays. Split form factor. Brad Lynch / @sadlyitsbradley : Meta “Puffin” is a light-weight mixed reality goggle roadmapped for 2027 instead of La Jolla. Using pancake lens They plan to separate compute and battery from the head, tethered to a puck in your pocket It will not include controllers, but use hands + eye input like Vision Pro [image]
