Samsung Galaxy Ring teardown: disposable tech built not to last over two years due to lithium ion batteries that can't be replaced without destroying the device

Taking a closer look at Samsung's newest—and most disposable—addition to the Galaxy line  —  New product categories are a big deal for tech companies.

Samsung's Galaxy hardware has long moved away from user-removable batteries: a 2015 Galaxy Note 5 leak flagged that design change well before the Ring. The Ring extends that trade-off into a much smaller, body-worn category, where the battery is central to the product's useful life.

The finding also revives an older Samsung waste concern. Its decision to dispose of rather than refurbish Note7 units showed how battery-related product decisions can limit recovery of materials; the Ring's sealed construction similarly constrains repair or reuse once its battery degrades.

First-order effects

  • Galaxy Ring owners have no practical battery-replacement path; declining battery capacity can end the device's usable life even if its sensors and enclosure still work.
  • Samsung faces a durability and waste critique for a new Galaxy category whose hardware had recently been reviewed as having long battery life without a subscription, but not a serviceable battery.

  • Repair businesses and resale channels have little ability to extend Ring lifetimes, shifting replacement demand toward new-device sales rather than repair or refurbishment.
  • Competing health-ring makers can differentiate on repairability or battery-service options, while buyers may weigh expected replacement cycles more heavily alongside tracking accuracy and platform compatibility.

Third-order effects

  • If sealed batteries become standard in compact wearables, the category may increasingly operate as a recurring hardware-replacement market rather than one supported by repair and resale.
  • The tension between miniaturization and serviceability could make product-longevity expectations and end-of-life handling a more important competitive and policy issue, though the corpus does not establish how rivals will respond.

The trend: Compact wearable devices are tightening the trade-off between small, integrated designs and the ability to repair or extend product life.
