Meta closes Ready at Dawn Studios, acquired in June 2020 and which produced VR games like Lone Echo and Echo VR, to meet Reality Labs' new budgetary ceiling

Echo VR developer Ready at Dawn Studios is now closed for business.  —  Updated 8/17 at 5:19pm ET: The information Android Central …

Context & Ripple Effects

Meta bought Ready at Dawn during its VR game-studio acquisition push, bringing the makers of Lone Echo and Echo VR inside its Oculus/Reality Labs content operation. The closure turns that acquisition from a content-expansion bet into a budget-control decision.

The studio had already planned to end Echo VR in 2023 to focus on another project, making this a further contraction of its VR-game output rather than an isolated product sunset. Later Reality Labs coverage of multiple VR studio closures places the decision in a broader cost-cutting arc.

First-order effects

  • Ready at Dawn ceases operations, ending its ability to develop new Meta-funded VR titles and leaving its workforce and active projects subject to Meta's closure process.
  • Reality Labs reduces its internal VR-game development footprint to comply with the newly imposed budget ceiling.

Second-order effects

  • Meta has fewer owned studios to supply headset-exclusive software, increasing the importance of prioritizing remaining teams and persuading outside developers to support its VR platform.
  • For Quest users, the earlier planned Echo VR shutdown and this studio closure together narrow continuity for a recognizable set of first-party VR experiences.

Third-order effects

  • If repeated across Reality Labs, studio closures shift Meta's VR strategy away from building a large captive content pipeline and toward tighter portfolio selection; that can make exclusive-content spending harder to justify against other platform investments.
  • The later reports of cuts affecting Oculus Studios teams suggest this is part of a longer reset in which VR content organizations are judged more directly against budget constraints, though the eventual mix of internal and third-party games remains uncertain.

The trend: Meta's closure of Ready at Dawn is one data point in Reality Labs' shift from VR-content expansion through acquisitions toward stricter capital and operating discipline.

Meta is closing Ready at Dawn.  It's sad to see the studio's story end like this.  If Meta's willing to lose $1.5 billion a month on its VR/AR boondoggle, the burn rate of a studio not even big enough to trigger the WARN Act (<50 employees) is a rounding error.  —  https://www.an…

Meta poured billions into VR, snatched up tons of talent, and is now blowing it all up. Ready at Dawn is 20 years old. It started with games for the PSP. This sucks so much.

Wait, budgetary ceiling? For reality labs, the place where meta has burned $45bn? Not a great sign for the company

Over the past year I've honestly become more and more confused on why this acquisition happened in the first place with Meta giving all the heavy hitter projects to other Oculus Studios. Feels like they never got a chance to do anything.

Meta just CLOSED its best studio. Unbelievable. They made: PSP God of War Daxter Lone Echo Echo VR Lone Echo 2 This f***ing industry.... https://www.androidcentral.com/ ...

Ugh. Really sad that Ready At Dawn is being closed down. Lone Echo was ground breaking VR and it's a huge loss to VR in general to have them gone. I feel for all of my friends and past co-workers who are now going to be looking for work.

After 20yrs RAD has shut down. It was great working there. I met so many cool people! We have mostly Senior+ talent looking for jobs! Leads, directors, etc. Help these folks out! I'm laid off too so if you are looking for a graphics engineer with 10yrs experience, hit me up!

@Tyrielwood Oh no don't say these things or people will think you are a Meta hater. You can't hate Meta and Zuck because they sell cheap Quests man! #sarcasm Meta is a joke. Absolute, total joke.

Ready at Dawn Studios is closing today, and it's absolutely heartbreaking to hear. Getting Echo VR to work on the OG Quest was a miracle in and of itself, and I feel like this team wasn't given its proper time to shine. Particularly on Quest.

Tears fill my eyes as I write this. My love for Ready at Dawn and the Lone Echo series runs deep. I truly believe that the studio, with its incredibly talented team and their stunning VR games, deserved far more recognition and success for their contributions to our scene.

This one hits particularly hard. Heart goes out to the incredible artists at Ready at Dawn. Lone Echo and its sequel remain crowning achievements, even if most gamers haven't experienced them. I hope someday this studio will get the recognition it deserves. Sad, sad day.

This is a *deeply* disappointing, inexcusable example of studio mismanagement. One of the most invigorating, all-round promising studios in the entire games industry. We should have been enjoying new Echo VR and Lone Echo games for long to come. Devastated for the studio.
  • @7egend @7egend on x
@Wario64 Shame they never got the chance to release a follow up to The Order 1886, atmospherically, it was one of my favorite settings of any game.
  • @shrives93 Chris Shriver on x
A real shame to see Ready at Dawn close its doors because of what I can only assume are $$$ reasons due to the lack of huge adoption of VR in the industry and a small attachment rate for their titles. Hopefully the folks that were a part of the studio get back on their feet soon.
  • @gwanatu Nicholas Sutrich on x
My heart goes out to all the folks affected here and I hope you land something new quickly. This was a super talented team and these feelings have been echoed time and time again in the games industry over the past year.
