When Facebook unveiled the 17-lens Surround 360 in April, it promised to publish the hardware designs rather than sell the camera itself — today's release makes good on that, handing anyone the bill of materials for a roughly $30K stereo-3D rig (the original unveil framed the $30K build cost as the point). The move only pays off if someone actually builds the cameras, because Facebook's real product is the 360-degree video supply feeding its viewer side.

That viewer side already exists in pieces: a dedicated Facebook 360 hub locked to Samsung Gear VR, and a Capture SDK aimed at making high-quality 360 capture easier for creators. Open-sourcing the camera completes the loop — cheap rigs at the bottom, professional gear via partners at the top.

  • VR content creators and boutique manufacturers can now build a stereo-3D capture rig from published specs instead of waiting for commercial products, immediately expanding the pool of 360 footage available to Facebook's Gear VR-only hub.
