Biggest takeaway from half a day using Apple Intelligence?  The Apple Mail app is gonna see a SURGE of usage when this ships.  The new inbox view with summaries instead of often useless line previews is a GAME CHANGER.
  • @markgurman Mark Gurman on threads
So far the best feature in Apple Intelligence are the email summaries within notifications.  The Writing Tools interface is too hidden to get much use, especially on the mac.
  • @benedictevans Benedict Evans on threads
Posit: software goes from science-fiction to AI to smart to auto, and then to ‘just software’.  Here, Apple is making LLM rewrite and summary into the new spellcheck.
  • @stroughtonsmith … Steve Troughton-Smith on mastodon
Apple clearly has vacuumed up data from European websites and open-source projects to build its Foundation Models, which makes it incredibly distasteful for them to be trying to hold Apple Intelligence hostage as a bargaining chip against EU regulation.  If for some reason regula…

@stroughtonsmith @applemlresearch  —  Gotta hand it to them: among the shitty companies they are trying to be the least shitty.  Esp. compared to Microsoft's “whatever's on the web is up for grabs”.
  • @stroughtonsmith … Steve Troughton-Smith on mastodon
@viticci not to worry, European developers can't build for it either, so there won't be much to review anyway

It's not like I was dreaming to review Apple Intelligence anyway, but regardless - as we expected - I can't access it.  —  Even with iPhone set to English and United States region, it recognizes that I'm in the EU.  —  No Apple Intelligence for me this year.  Thus my iOS 18 revie…

The truth about Siri 2.0 on the new iOS 18.1 Beta with Apple Intelligence... IT'S STILL TRASH 🤬📱🗑️ UPDATE: Apparently only the UI got updated today. Can't believe Siri was so bad. No wonder I never used it. 📱🗑️ [video]

At AMD Tech Day a few weeks ago, I decided to record audio from the opening talk in the Notes app on iOS 18. Now with Apple Intelligence, it created this summary based on the nearly 2 hours of audio. It's incredibly detailed and very well done [image]

There's a note about prompt injection in the new Apple Foundation Language Models paper that mentions that it was affecting their on-device summarization feature - which they attempted to avoid with an extra synthetic dataset [image]
  • @sambhavgupta6 Sambhav Gupta on x
According to a recently published research paper by Apple, the Apple Intelligence Foundation Language Model was trained using Google Cloud's Tensor Processing Units v4 and v5. [image]

Can't say I'm too impressed by their opt-out mechanism for excluding your website from their training data: to opt-out, simply add “Applebot” to your robots.txt file around 12 months ago

Is someone having a rough day because of Apple Intelligence?  [Mother Ignoring Kid Drowning In A Pool Meme: Mother - Apple Intelligence, Happy kid - models supporting Apple Intelligence, Drowning kid - other Apple device models, Skeleton at the bottom - Users in Europe]
  • @maxwinebach Max Weinbach on x
It's very likely this is because of Apple's dislike for Nvidia, but a lot of the push for Nvidia GPUs right now is about training rather than inference, but now the widest rollout of consumer AI will be trained without Nvidia's GPUs Sets an interesting precedent
  • @benbajarin Ben Bajarin on x
Good read on Apple's foundational models. Like may things Apple does, they are in a position to do this in a unique, very Apple, way. Which allows them a lot of differentiation. https://machinelearning.apple.com/ ...

iOS 18 Siri looks unreal 😍 [video]
  • @maxwinebach Max Weinbach on x
Wow, Apple Foundational Models, both on device and server, were fully trained on Google TPU clusters. They didn't use Nvidia in any training for it [image]

So today iOS 18.1 developer beta started rolling out And tucked into the settings is another beta: Apple Intelligence You have to join a waitlist (to manage server capacity) to start using any of the features [image]

Loving the new Apple Intelligence Siri animation! Edit: a restart fixes the double-tap gesture. Thanks for the tips! [video]

Apple Intelligence hits the market in beta today: A pretty impressive 2.6b on-device LLM running on the Neural Engine compressed down to ~1GB. It consumes way below 10W. Congrats to my former teammates & colleagues on landing this! Tech report is also out:

Apple Intelligence is still very early, but initial tests have it rewriting text in the 90-120 token per second range. Also, mostly being done on Apple Neural Engine so another validation for the NPU! https://creativestrategies.com/ ...

The new Siri in iOS 18.1 Beta 1 has the below enhancements: - Better contextual understanding of your query - Integration with Apple's Support Guide to help with common Apple Device problems - New UI - Slightly tweaked voice On-screen awareness, semantic index, app intents, and

I expect that will work well enough to protect against accidental attacks in documents being summarized, but wouldn't be strong enough to prevent an adversarial attack from getting through Full paper is here: https://machinelearning.apple.com/ ...

Are Apple closed source models based on a modified version of JAX? Apparently they were trained on TPUs?

Interesting that Apple Intelligence suggests apps to open and the sort order is different than Spotlight. [image]

It doesn't take long using Apple Intelligence to see how big this is to have Gen AI integrated at the system level as a feature of the operating system, not just as a feature of certain apps or services.
  • @maxwinebach Max Weinbach on x
Depending on the task you give Apple Intelligence, it can peak up to ~5.5W on the ANE Mail summarization is less than 1-2W, but rewriting here hits up to around 5.9W. This is admittedly very efficient. Also, it did a better job at re-writing this document than Gemini did lol [vid…

It also finally answers the question “did Apple train their text models on an unlicensed scrape of the web?” Unsurprisingly, they did. Full PDF paper here: https://machinelearning.apple.com/ ... [image]

Writing about LLMs in the “early days” (approximately 18 months ago) I highlighted them as an integrated writing tool feature. The iOS/iPadOS 18.1 beta effectively distinguishes between “feature” and “product” with a well-done UX. See https://medium.learningbyshipping.com/ ...

For those looking to integrate Siri and Apple Intelligence into your app, Apple has released ALL the 12 app Intent domains. Here is the list and the documentation related to it:

@AppleNR_ I found that Siri understands me better and the context of what I'm saying. Apart from that it's only the new UI, Apple device support, and slightly tweaked voice. It'll get much better with the semantic index in later betas.

Unfortunately, Apple Intelligence is not available in the EU :(
  • @dylanmcd8 Dylan on x
The Apple Intelligence waitlist seems to be per account, not per device as the wording suggests. My iPad finished updating first, and I joined there. When my iPhone finished, I was already on the waitlist for it.
