DefiLlama and Wintermute: the aggregate market cap of stablecoins crossed $164B for the first time since the collapse of Terra in May 2022; USDT is at $114.26B

Context & Ripple Effects

Terra’s 2022 failure coincided with a sharp contraction in DeFi assets, including a drop in total value locked to roughly $112 billion in May and further pressure later that year. The return of aggregate stablecoin capitalization to its pre-collapse range is therefore a concrete measure of recovered on-chain dollar liquidity.

The recovery was not evenly distributed: USDT accounts for most of the reported total. Later coverage recorded a new record near $190 billion in aggregate stablecoin value, extending the rebound beyond this initial threshold.

First-order effects

  • Stablecoin users and DeFi venues have a larger pool of dollar-pegged assets available for trading, settlement and collateral than during the post-Terra contraction.
  • USDT’s $114.26 billion capitalization makes Tether the principal beneficiary of the recovery and reinforces its weight in the stablecoin supply.

Second-order effects

  • More available stablecoin liquidity can support activity across DeFi protocols and exchanges, where dollar-pegged tokens are core trading and settlement assets.
  • USDT’s outsized share means platforms, market makers and users become more exposed to conditions affecting one issuer, rather than to a broadly balanced set of stablecoins.

Third-order effects

  • If issuance continues to recover while remaining concentrated, stablecoins may become a more central liquidity layer for on-chain markets—but the sector’s resilience will remain closely tied to its largest issuer.
  • The contrast with the post-2022 DeFi decline shows that stablecoin-market-cap recovery and broader DeFi activity should be tracked separately; renewed supply is not by itself proof of durable protocol demand.

The trend: This is one data point in the rebuilding of on-chain dollar liquidity after the Terra shock, with recovery increasingly concentrated in the largest stablecoin.

It looks like it's not only a big day for ETH...but also for stablecoins! The total stablecoin market cap has finally started to break $160b after 3 months of remaining relatively flat, highlighting increasing demand and growing confidence in these assets Bullish. [image]

Left a meetup about macro trends with renewed assurance and optimism. Leaking some insights that left an impression on me, but for the full story join @arcthecommunity. Stables market cap growing means inflow and gains staying in the space. Stable treasuries are the new giants

Stablecoin inflows is just one part of a story. Currently, the market is undergoing an inflexion point where: -regulatory bodies looking into compliance for this sector (i.e. MiCa, DC and etc) -innovative stable product offerings being launched -chatter that Circle may IPO soon

Stablecoin liquidity picking up again. This correlates with Bitcoin price gains. USDT market cap growing above trend again. USDC and USDT market cap both expanding again. [image]
