Elon Musk's X poll asking whether Tesla should invest $5B in xAI ends with 67.9% voting yes, after Musk said on Tesla's earnings call that he supported the idea

- CEO takes poll on whether EV maker should back his startup  — The two companies have intermingled on procurement, recruiting

Bloomberg Dana Hull

Context & Ripple Effects

The poll put a public measure of support behind a potential Tesla-to-xAI capital transfer at a time when the companies were already described as overlapping in procurement and recruiting. It followed reports that xAI had begun raising outside commitments, including early commitments toward its initial funding round.

The proposal became a recurring question of governance and financing rather than a one-off poll: SpaceX was later reported to have committed $2 billion to xAI, and Tesla subsequently disclosed a $2 billion preferred-share investment in xAI.

First-order effects

  • The result gives Musk a visible, though nonbinding, investor-community signal supporting his stated preference for a Tesla investment in xAI.
  • Tesla investors immediately face a clearer capital-allocation and related-party question, while xAI gains a potential source of funding tied to a company already intertwined with it operationally.

Second-order effects

  • Any Tesla investment would make xAI's fundraising less dependent on outside investors and could deepen shared purchasing and talent competition between the Musk-led companies.
  • The prospect raises the bar for Tesla to explain whether an xAI stake advances its own AI spending priorities, rather than primarily financing an affiliated startup.

Third-order effects

  • If such cross-company investments persist, Musk-linked companies could increasingly function as a connected capital network, concentrating governance scrutiny around conflicts, valuation, and minority-shareholder protections.
  • The later shift from a proposed $5 billion to a disclosed $2 billion preferred-share deal suggests that affiliated AI financing may be structured and resized as investor approval and corporate constraints evolve.

The trend: This is one data point in the financialization of AI, where large operating companies increasingly fund AI ventures that are strategically and operationally connected to them.

(This will happen regardless of poll results)

It's hard to explain how bad this is.  The CEO sets up a side hustle AI company when Tesla is supposed be the the AI play, then milks Tesla for $billions into an entity he owns (80%?) of rather than sub 20%.  Not surprised one bit but it's still staggering the level of self-deali…

he didn't mention the $5B but did mention it. a softball question was teed up for him.

Should Tesla invest $5B into @xAI, assuming the valuation is set by several credible outside investors? (Board approval & shareholder vote are needed, so this is just to test the waters)

Wait, I thought TSLA was an AI company? Now TSLA shareholders have to spend $5b for a piece of xAI at some outrageous valuation. The $56b the shareholders paid you I guess didn't include the AI.

@elonmusk @xai I would like to own a stake in xAI through Tesla

Doesn't have the cash on hand to donate to Trump and pay Twitter debt -> Idea: Transfer Tesla money to xAI -> have xAI pay a “licensing fee” to use Twitter data -> pay off Twitter debt with the cashflow -> now can use the money earmarked for payments for donations. Classic Elon!

I'd still like to see the related party transaction disclosure for the Nvidia chips to X
