Overture was launched by AWS, Meta, Microsoft, TomTom and the Linux Foundation to pursue interoperable open-source map data. Its first release centered on 59 million points of interest contributed by Meta and Microsoft, making this a progression from an initial data contribution to a broader shared-map release.

The collaboration also sits in a longer tension: major platforms have become increasingly important contributors to OpenStreetMap, raising questions about how corporate participation shapes open geographic data. The new release makes the foundation’s governance model more consequential, while its transportation layer is not yet final.
