After weeks of leaks, the test is live: sources told the Guardian in June that Facebook was planning an optional end-to-end encryption mode for Messenger (reported plans), and this week the company confirmed it by putting the feature into real users' hands. The design choices matter as much as the existence of the mode — encrypted chats are visible on only one device per end, and messages can self-destruct on a timer, both departures from Messenger's normal multi-device, permanently-stored model.

This is the opening move of what becomes a seven-year campaign rather than a one-off feature: Facebook later extends encryption to Messenger voice and video calls and starts bringing it to Instagram DMs (encrypted calls rollout), before finally making it the default for one-on-one Messenger chats in late 2023. The 2016 opt-in test is where the trade-off — user privacy versus Facebook's own access to message content — first gets made in public.

First-order effects

  • Users who opt in lose cross-device access to those conversations — each thread lives on exactly one device per participant — and gain self-destruct timers, meaning Facebook's servers can no longer read or retain the content of encrypted chats.

Second-order effects

  • Making encryption opt-in inside its largest messaging app puts pressure on Facebook's own adjacent surfaces: the same architecture later has to be built out for Messenger calls and Instagram DMs, forcing the company to rework its messaging stack piece by piece rather than ship one switch.

  • If the pattern holds — opt-in test, then calls, then default for one-on-one chats — mainstream consumer messaging shifts from server-readable storage to client-side encryption as the baseline, with the laggard surfaces (group chats) exposing how costly the migration is for platform features built on server-side access.

The trend: Consumer messaging platforms are converting end-to-end encryption from a niche opt-in feature into default infrastructure, a migration measured in years and rolled out surface by surface.
