Microsoft brings Docker Datacenter to Azure Marketplace, shows off SQL Server in a Linux container

In mid-2016 Microsoft was still widely read as a Windows-first company, so two moves landed together as a signal: putting Docker Datacenter into the Azure Marketplace alongside its VM lineup, and demonstrating SQL Server — historically welded to Windows Server — running inside a Linux container. The demo was a preview of what shipped a year later, when SQL Server 2017 ran on Linux, including in Docker containers.

The follow-through came fast: Azure Container Instances made per-container deployment and billing native to Azure, and Virtual Kubelet and Open Service Broker wired Kubernetes containers directly into Azure services. By 2023 the arc completed with Azure Linux, Microsoft's own container host OS for AKS — the company went from hosting other people's containers to shipping its own container OS.

First-order effects

  • Enterprises standardized on Azure can now procure Docker Datacenter — Docker's container management stack — through Marketplace billing instead of separate contracts, shortening the path from VM estates to containerized apps.
  • The SQL Server-in-a-Linux-container demo tells Microsoft's largest database customers their workloads are no longer bound to Windows Server, decoupling SQL Server licensing from the underlying OS.

Second-order effects

  • Docker gains a distribution channel through Azure's enterprise customer base at exactly the moment container orchestration is consolidating around Kubernetes — which Microsoft then joined and built tooling for.
  • AWS and Google Cloud, already Linux-native, lose one of Microsoft's traditional differentiators: the claim that serious databases require Windows, forcing competition onto price and managed-service depth rather than OS lock-in.

Third-order effects

  • If the pattern holds, Microsoft's center of gravity shifts from selling Windows Server to renting neutral infrastructure — culminating in first-party container infrastructure like Azure Linux rather than dependence on third-party distros or Docker itself.
  • Database portability becomes table stakes: once flagship commercial databases run in Linux containers, buyers can treat the DB engine as swappable infrastructure, pressuring all vendors whose margins depend on OS-plus-database bundles.

The trend: Microsoft spent the decade after this demo converting Azure from a Windows-Server extension into an OS-neutral container platform, ending with its own container host OS.
