A look at Trump VP pick JD Vance's tech ties, like working at Peter Thiel's Mithril Capital and investing in Rumble; Vance advocated for repealing Section 230

Vance has long had connections to Silicon Valley through his former life as a venture capitalist, including to long-time Donald Trump supporter and investor Peter Thiel.

Interesting - CNN just said Trump talked to Musk this weekend about who he should pick for VP

Are you a fan of all of those guys who are directly responsible for making the internet an unusable dogshit hellhole?  Well boy do I have a VP for you.

Given that Vance is a Peter Thiel guy and Thiel (along with Elon Musk) seemed to have helped engineer Vance as VP nominee, it's worth revisiting this excellent @lionel_trolling piece on Thiel's obvious fascism: https://www.unpopularfront.news/ ...

The fact that J. D. Vance and Ron Klain worked together at a venture capital fund is really a perfect detail for our times. The fact that the fund was called Revolution is a bit much, tho. https://www.axios.com/... [image]

Hearing A LOT of alarm today among GOP donors & Reaganite conservative types about JD Vance On trade, taxes, unions, antitrust — he's signaled sharp departure from traditional conservatism, despite venture capitalist roots Now he's heir apparent for the party, & Reaganites

Congratulations @JDVance1! Excellent decision by @realDonaldTrump.

The best thing Trump/Vance can do during their administration, since they cannot (and won't) materially reduce the debt situation, is to create four years of permissive space in which crypto may thrive, unpersecuted. Then, its roots seep deeper into the soil of our culture, and

Vance only seems to have ever served on one board as a VC: AppHarvest, a Kentucky-based indoor farming startup focused on tomatoes. He left the board in 2021 when he ran for Senate in Ohio. It had recently gone public via a SPAC. In 2023, AppHarvest filed for bankruptcy.

you should have been there in 2016 man. all the Tim Snyder David Frum Atlantic Mag types couldn't stop talking about this guy JD Vance and how cool he is. Silicon Valley was selling the idea they would create jobs. very funny

oh tell me more, did you meet JD Vance in Silicon Valley? Was Peter Thiel there? was it at a party? shall we pitch an article to the Atlantic?

Vance has a lot in common w Biden antitrust enforcers. But those similarities stop when it comes to content issues

JD Vance's wife Usha has represented Disney and Paramount. So I guess that means both VP candidate spouses did entertainment law work.

JD Vance is likely going to switch on Lina Khan now, but it's still important he said what he said at a YCombinator conference dedicated to breaking up Google.

Fun fact: @JDVance1 was a keynoter at @ycombinator's first policy event in DC, #RemedyFest, held earlier this year. Here is the summary of his remarks & more about that event: [image]

The real grade for JD Vance as a VC/tech investor is: Incomplete due to wanderlust He was a junior invstor at Mithril for just 2 years. Then left Revolution after two years. Then left Narya after two years to run for Senate.

Trump picking J.D. Vance as VP would have huge implications for AI regulation. Vance (a protege of Peter Thiel) has some... interesting opinions here. [image]

Mike Pence was a VP pick to appease the Evangelists. Now Trump has completely controlled the religious right and JD Vance is to get the Silicon Valley wealthiest investors on board.

Guy Laron's description of right-wing populism in Israel is, I think, more generally true. This is the trajectory that JD Vance solidifies and part of the adaptation of Silicon Valley to Trump. What my old friend Jack O'Dell used to call “the okey-doke.” https://catalyst-journal.…

Silicon Valley has long been perceived as of one of the most liberal, Left-leaning places in the world. And now, key Valley figures have boosted Vance into a Republican VP candidate and will play a very big role in trying to get Trump reelected. I think the lesson here is that

My sense is that a Trump/Vance administration will result in data restrictions/obligations being enacted similar to those introduced by the DMA in the EU. Trump has been vocally critical of Meta recently, and JD Vance took a hostile stance toward BigTech in his Senate campaign. […

Quick take on Vance: his appointment as VP suggests that the GOP is looking to make an appeal to anti-woke Silicon Valley or finance types to fill the void left by the Republican Party's competency crisis. Right now, there is tremendous asymmetry between the parties in policy

Interesting non-partisan observation: At least 75% of the 4 folks on the Presidential (and VP) ballot support FTC Chair Lina Khan's strong stance against big tech monopolization. You have to look back to the days of railroad monopolies to see such unanimity. [image]
  • @mattyglesias Matthew Yglesias on x
This read of Vance as appealing primarily to businessmen radicalized against wokeness is much more correct than views of him as the harbinger of a new anti-capitalist GOP. In a better world, he'd be a moderate Republican winning a gubernatorial race in California.

R E A L I G N M E N T guys, many backed by the same funders who pushed JD Vance from Silicon Valley to AEI to the Senate, are having a moment rn. Remember their primary function is selling another faux populist GOP rebrand (not to be confused with the ones from 2000, 2009, 2016)

On JD Vance as a “successful” venture capitalist, a VC I know who attended Yale Law w/ him just texted me this: “Thiel basically backed him so that he could say he had a private sector career & the fund did almost nothing.”
