Context & Ripple Effects

The IOC’s move follows Saudi Arabia’s launch of a large multi-genre Esports World Cup in Riyadh, extending the country’s role from staging an esports tournament to becoming the long-term home of an Olympic-branded competition.

The agreement also advances a gaming-and-esports hub strategy previously framed around major investment through 2030, while related coverage has already highlighted scrutiny of Saudi Arabia’s sportswashing claims.

First-order effects

  • Saudi Arabia and its national Olympic body gain a 12-year hosting partnership and the immediate prestige of launching the Olympic Esports Games in 2025.
  • The IOC creates a dedicated Olympic esports property, giving competitive gaming a recurring event under the Olympic brand rather than a one-off experiment.

Second-order effects

  • Tournament operators, teams and game-rights holders will have a major new international event to evaluate for schedules, participation and commercial partnerships.
  • The Olympic affiliation may raise the value of elite esports events and increase pressure on other host cities and organizers to differentiate their own competitions.

Third-order effects

  • If the event becomes durable, esports could develop a more centralized calendar in which rights holders, event organizers and national sports bodies negotiate alongside one another.
  • The long hosting term makes the location of major gaming events part of a broader contest for cultural influence; the scrutiny surrounding Saudi-backed esports will likely remain attached to that expansion.

The trend: Esports is moving from publisher- and tournament-led competition toward institutionally branded, state-backed global event platforms.

An Olympic event COULD be amazing for esports. If done with good intentions and any sincere understanding of the industry. But it's clear everyone involved sees this as a way to save their rapidly declining viewership with the New Shiny thing with no interest in legitimacy.

While Hollywood still seems a little wary of Saudi Arabia, the video game industry is definitely not: https://www.bloomberg.com/...

There's something poetic about the Olympics refusing to touch esports with a 10 foot pole until Saudis pay them enough money to sportswash with it just like they do with the sports Olympics.

So uh, why are the esports Olympics in a different country and in a different year than the real Olympics
