Meta says it will soon roll back restrictions on Donald Trump's Instagram and Facebook accounts to ensure parity among candidates ahead of the 2024 election
- While those penalties were designed to limit any public figure's accounts during civil unrest, Donald Trump's accounts …

Context & Ripple Effects
Meta’s move follows its 2023 decision to restore Trump’s accounts with new guardrails after the two-year ban. The latest step removes a remaining distinction in how a major candidate can use Facebook and Instagram during the campaign.
The change sits alongside Meta’s earlier plan to pause new political ads shortly before the election, showing the company is separately managing candidate access and paid political amplification.
First-order effects
- Trump regains unrestricted access to Facebook and Instagram under Meta’s stated candidate-parity rationale, while Meta retires the account-specific penalties it had retained after reinstatement.
- Meta’s trust-and-safety teams must apply its ordinary platform rules to Trump’s accounts rather than a bespoke restriction regime.
Second-order effects
- Other platforms and political campaigns face added pressure to explain whether candidate-specific account limits are compatible with consistent election-period rules.
- Meta’s distinction between organic candidate speech and paid political advertising becomes more consequential: account access broadens while its planned late-campaign ad limits remain a separate control.
Third-order effects
- If platforms increasingly favor uniform candidate treatment over individualized sanctions during elections, enforcement may shift toward generally applicable rules and away from high-profile account exceptions.
- The episode underscores a durable governance tension: platforms must make moderation decisions that can be judged both as safety measures and as interventions in electoral access.
The trend: Election-period platform governance is moving toward standardized candidate-access rules while retaining narrower controls over specific forms of political amplification.

So @meta is going to reinstate Donald Trump's Facebook and Instagram accounts, while they allow their right-wing “fact-checking” partner @thedispatchmedia labels accurate posts about Trump's Project 2025 as “false”.

After Facebook/IG brought Trump back on early last year, they did so with a threat of “heightened penalties.” That meant another rules violation, even a minor one, would lead to another month(s)-long suspension Those “heightened penalties” have been removed. …

This decision enables Trump to starting paying Meta to directly advertise using his accounts. He spent over $100 million on ads during the last campaign. I'm sure this is incidental to the company's decision, and anyone who thinks otherwise is a cynical asshole.

The evidence we collected on the Select Committee showed how companies like @Meta turned a blind eye while Trump used their platforms to incite violence, spread disinformation, and radicalize thousands to storm the Capitol. Now, they are giving him free rein to do it all again.

The illusion of parity among presidential candidates here is merely Meta paying lip service to its own policy compliance, of which it hasn't bolstered nor been faithful. A dangerous game to play and a tip that platforms are rarely neutral actors. https://www.axios.com/...

...And here we see the limits of technopolitical governance. Private companies in control of communication platforms do not treat all users the same. Instead, ad hac (sic lol) decisions are made to influence the appearance of “fairness and transparency” when none was ever there.
