This milestone caps an eighteen-month build-out of Facebook's Tor presence: first the IETF formally recognized .onion domains as special-use after Facebook and the Tor Project pushed for it, then a January Android app update let users route traffic through Orbot. A million monthly Tor users is a rounding error next to the billion-plus who used Facebook on a single day in August 2015 (the company's first billion-user day), but it makes Facebook one of the largest mainstream services reachable anonymously by default.

The significance is directional rather than volumetric: a company whose business depends on identity and targeting is investing engineering effort to serve people who deliberately obscure theirs — users citing privacy, security, and safety per Facebook's own framing.

First-order effects

  • Users in censored or surveilled networks gain a first-party, officially maintained path to Facebook over Tor, instead of relying on third-party proxies or the Orbot workaround alone.
  • Facebook absorbs the operational cost of serving anonymized traffic — abuse handling and account recovery get harder when IP-based signals are stripped away.
