Microsoft is closing a platform gap it opened against itself: the OCR capability that arrived on its iOS Translator app in February now reaches Android, alongside offline support for 43 languages. The app itself only launched last August as a typed-and-spoken translator for iOS, Android, Apple Watch and Android Wear.

The competitive frame was set earlier by Google, whose Translate app has offered instant camera-view translation since January 2015 — so Microsoft's photo translation is catch-up on the capture side, even as its 43-language offline pack pushes ahead on the connectivity side.
