Cara, an artist-run, anti-AI social platform, grew from 40K to 650K users in the past week, as some Instagram artists leave over plans to train AI on user data

‘Building a product is a bit like making art,’ said founder Jingna Zhang  —  Artists have finally had enough with Meta's predatory AI policies …

TechCrunch Amanda Silberling

Context & Ripple Effects

Cara's surge turns artist concern about Instagram's AI-training plans into a measurable migration event. It follows reports that Meta's broader AI rollout was already changing the experience of its apps through ubiquitous AI features and proliferating AI-generated posts Meta's expanding AI presence across its apps.

The move also establishes the immediate backdrop for Cara's subsequent growth and its founder's articulation of an artist-centered platform focus Cara's artist-first positioning after the influx. The significance is less the raw user count than the proof that data-use policies can become a distribution risk for an incumbent social network.

First-order effects

  • Cara gains a sharply larger creator audience, while Instagram loses at least some artists who view its proposed training use of user data as unacceptable.
  • Cara's anti-AI positioning becomes a concrete product and community differentiator rather than a niche message, increasing pressure to serve a rapidly expanded user base.

Second-order effects

  • Artist-focused platforms and portfolio communities have a clearer incentive to compete on consent, provenance, and assurances around AI training—not only feeds and audience reach.
  • For Meta, creator dissatisfaction can make AI-policy communication and trust safeguards more important to retaining the artists whose work supplies distinctive content for Instagram.

Third-order effects

  • If creator migrations persist, social platforms may segment around data-rights governance: large networks monetize broad content pools while smaller communities differentiate through tighter limits on model training.
  • The episode points toward creator consent becoming part of platform competition, though a one-week migration alone does not establish durable switching or a lasting audience shift.

The trend: Generative AI is turning the terms under which platforms can use user-created work into a competitive lever for creator communities.

the folks building the cara app (where artists are migrating because of its strong “no AI” policies) are learning in real time what happens when you scale fast. there's a reason a lot of new apps first launch in limited beta and while it's some to create false demand, it's also s…

Sure.  But then Cara is gonna have to be profitable at some point.  What do you suppose happens then?  Who pays who?

Flower Goddess 🌷 Also, all the stuff that's going on about Meta, Ai, and Cara.  Hearing about artists throwing in the towel or leaving Instagram and their social media.  Don't throw away all your years of hard work to a robot.  We have no control over the ai thing, but to flat ou…

Fellow artists, have you heard already about Cara app?  It's the new instagram but just for artists.  If you're like me, tired of scrolling through advertisements and influencer shit, the place feel like paradise... Come find me there and give it a go! @cara_artists

Cara is rapidly discovering the cost of building a social network with insane storage requirements (Instagram-like service).  The price of building a network that doesn't permit AI training is that you're going to need revenue just to keep the lights on, and that means it can't b…

Artists are fleeing Instagram to keep their work out of Meta's AI “Meta is training its AI on artists' creations.  They're flocking to AI-skeptical app Cara to protect themselves.”  The app has grown from about 40,000 users to 650,000 in the past week. …

I should be able to follow #Cara users from my Mastodon account.  You can't convince me to make yet another account in a yet another silo, but I'd love to see and share more art in my home feed.  Anyone have a connection to their team?  Would love to chat about the #fediverse.

“Cara isn't useful because it's focused on artists so the general public has no reason to be there :c” WE STILL NEED A CENTRAL HUB FOR ARTISTS. POTENTIAL CLIENTS NEED A CENTRAL HUB FOR ARTISTS. ART DIRECTORS NEED A PLACE TO FIND US. NOT EVERYTHING IS ABOUT ""THE BRAND""

Cara has felt like the creative site we've all been asking for. Despite its fresh and sleek design, it has a certain nostalgia that hasn't been replicated since the old DeviantArt days. It feels like an old hangout. If you're enjoying @Cara_HQ, please consider supporting:

The team at Cara was blindsided by the MASSIVE migration of half a million artists to their platform in the last week or two and could use some donations to help cover the cost of migrating to less predatory servers as they continue to grow. Consider buying them a coffee! [image]

A social media app built by volunteers went viral. As it was built on serverless it means $$ to pay. I really feel for app developers with a free app these days. Back in 2011, I had one of my social media apps go viral. It crashed my shared hosting rented machine. That was all.

I'm not migrating to Cara, it's being artfol 2.0 and it's not going to substitute instagram because it's focused to artists, not a generic user base. I know how this is going to end. If we want the same numbers and engagement for our posts, we need an actual IG alternative.

I won. I won my appeal. The Luxembourg court has ruled that Jeff Dieschburg infringed upon my copyright when he used my work without consent. Using a different medium was irrelevant. My work being ‘available online’ was irrelevant. Consent was necessary. 1/ [image]

People are being weirdly cynical / critical of Cara which is odd cause Twitter and Instagram would literally harvest your bone marrow for profit if they could get away with it. Cara is by artists, for artists; the more we support it the better it'll be as a long-term safe haven.
