Nvidia said newly announced RTX AI PC laptops from Asus and MSI will have up to GeForce RTX 4070 GPUs and “systems-on-a-chip with Windows 11 AI PC capabilities”

Nvidia and AMD are gearing up to launch gaming laptops that include the AI Copilot Plus features that Microsoft just announced for Qualcomm-powered laptops.

The Verge Tom Warren

Context & Ripple Effects

Nvidia had already positioned laptop GPUs for local AI work with its RTX 500 and RTX 1000 mobile GPUs, making this a move from component positioning toward Windows AI PC product categories.

It also extends Nvidia’s long-running OEM laptop strategy: its earlier RTX Studio laptop partner rollout showed how Nvidia uses Asus, MSI and other manufacturers to carry specialized GPU capabilities into retail systems.

First-order effects

  • Asus and MSI can market RTX-equipped gaming laptops around Windows 11 AI PC capabilities, combining discrete GeForce graphics with the AI PC feature set Microsoft is promoting.
  • Nvidia gains a route for its RTX laptop platform to participate in the AI PC cycle rather than leaving that category defined solely by Qualcomm-powered designs.

Second-order effects

  • AMD and other Windows laptop silicon suppliers face added pressure to show that their systems can support the same AI experiences while preserving differentiated gaming and graphics performance.
  • PC makers will need to explain how workloads are divided among system-on-chip AI hardware and discrete RTX GPUs, raising the value of software support and clear capability messaging over a simple AI-PC label.

Third-order effects

  • The AI PC category is likely to become more heterogeneous: systems may combine CPUs, NPUs and discrete GPUs rather than relying on a single processor type for every local AI task.
  • If Windows AI features become a mainstream buying criterion, platform competition will increasingly center on end-to-end hardware and software integration across Microsoft, chip suppliers and OEMs.

The trend: AI PCs are evolving from a processor-defined category into multi-accelerator Windows systems that pair dedicated AI silicon with discrete graphics.
