Four of the top seven best-reviewed games on Metacritic in 2024 so far, not counting remakes, are indies, including Animal Well and Balatro in the top three

Context & Ripple Effects

Animal Well and Balatro’s critical standing made a concentrated case for indie releases in a year when the review charts were unusually open to them. The signal was later reinforced by coverage of indie-led Steam unit-sales rankings and Summer Game Fest attention.

The pattern matters because it connects critical reception with a broader visibility moment for smaller games, rather than treating either title as an isolated breakout. Later coverage also found budget-priced games leading 2025’s review rankings as Xbox raised game prices.

First-order effects

  • Animal Well, Balatro, and their developers gain a stronger review-led discovery signal, helping distinguish them in a crowded release calendar.
  • Metacritic’s early-year rankings give players, storefronts, and games media a concrete benchmark that places indie releases alongside larger productions.

Second-order effects

  • Platform holders, publishers, and event organizers have more reason to feature distinctive smaller games when critical acclaim can translate into broader attention.
  • Larger publishers face a sharper comparison between high-budget release plans and smaller titles that can command critical attention without matching their scale.

Third-order effects

  • If repeated across release cycles, this could shift game discovery away from budget and franchise familiarity toward clearer creative differentiation and review momentum.
  • The durable question is whether critical prominence also sustains sales and studio viability; the later Steam sales and showcase coverage suggests that indie visibility was not limited to reviews alone.

The trend: Indie games are increasingly competing for mainstream attention through critical distinction, storefront discovery, and showcase visibility rather than production scale alone.

This. I cut my teeth in gaming journalism propping up indies and will always prop up indies bc they're some of the last vestiges of creativity in games.

With big-budget video games stagnating this year, indie games are filling the void. In fact, four of the top seven best-reviewed games this year so far (not counting remakes) were developed by independent game makers. This week's newsletter: https://www.bloomberg.com/...
