This shipment closes a loop Samsung opened last August, when it unveiled the 16TB-class 2.5-inch drive as a spec-sheet announcement; the PM1633a is that design reaching paying customers as the industry's highest-capacity SSD. It lands seven months after Samsung's consumer line topped out at 2TB drives priced at $800-$1,000, so the enterprise tier is running roughly an order of magnitude ahead of what buyers on the desktop side can get.

The capacity jump also validates the manufacturing bet Intel and Micron made when they argued 3D NAND would triple SSD capacities — Samsung is first to ship at this scale, which matters because capacity leadership in flash has historically translated into pricing leverage across the whole memory business.
