Apple releases iOS 17.5 with cross-platform detection of unwanted tracking devices, EU app downloads from websites, News+ features like offline mode, and more

Apple today released iOS 17.5 and iPadOS 17.5, major updates to the iOS 17 and iPadOS 17 operating system updates that came out last September.

MacRumors Juli Clover

Context & Ripple Effects

iOS 17.5 operationalizes the EU web-distribution path Apple outlined in March, after setting out Web Distribution for authorized developers. It extends a sequence of EU-specific platform changes that also included a browser-choice prompt and support for third-party browser engines.

The release also continues iOS 17’s steady addition of device-protection features, following Stolen Device Protection in iOS 17.3. The combination matters because the update pairs a new distribution route with a user-safety control and service improvements in a single platform release.

First-order effects

  • EU users can download qualifying developers’ apps from those developers’ websites, creating an iOS acquisition route outside the App Store.
  • Users gain cross-platform alerts for unwanted tracking devices, while News+ subscribers can access saved content without a network connection.

Second-order effects

  • Qualifying developers gain a direct distribution option in the EU and must decide whether its operational and customer-acquisition trade-offs justify using it alongside the App Store.
  • Cross-platform tracking alerts reduce the value of device-specific safety protections: accessory makers face stronger pressure to ensure their products can be identified across mobile platforms.

Third-order effects

  • If Apple continues implementing EU-specific access changes through iOS releases, iOS distribution may become more regionally differentiated rather than governed by a single global App Store model.
  • The update illustrates a broader platform bargain: opening selected access routes can be paired with expanded controls intended to preserve user trust and platform oversight.

The trend: Mobile platforms are moving toward selectively regulated distribution access while making safety and trust features more interoperable.

A couple months in, Apple has already broken a basic feature required by competing app stores. 😕 Apps on Apple's store can recognize a user across all of their devices, but competing app stores can't, because Apple inserts itself and this tracking tech between users and devs.

This could be an iOS 17.5 issue that needs a patch soon with iOS 17.5.1. Any friends in the EU who can also confirm or have experienced this?

If you have iOS 17.5 RC installed you will not have a new update as the public release is the same build as iOS 17.5 RC. Developers and Beta Testers just had it one week early.
