Sony reports Q4 revenue up 14% YoY to ~$22.4B, above ~$18.5B est., operating profit up 57% YoY to ~$1.5B, and 20.8M PS5 units sold in FY 2023, below guidance
Sony on Tuesday reported a 7% drop in annual profits in the fiscal year 2023, dragged down by a decline in its financial services division.

Context & Ripple Effects
Sony’s earlier results showed a sharp PS5 sales ramp, including 3.3M PS5 units sold in the prior-year first quarter, even as operating income was under pressure. The latest results put that hardware momentum alongside a fiscal-year shipment miss.
The contrast matters because Sony’s revenue and quarterly operating profit outperformed expectations while annual profit was held back by financial services. That makes the report a mixed read on the company’s console-led growth and broader earnings mix.
First-order effects
Sony beat the cited revenue estimate and lifted quarterly operating profit, giving its reported quarter a stronger operational outcome than expected.
PS5 fiscal-year sales of 20.8M fell short of Sony’s guidance, while the financial-services decline contributed to a 7% drop in annual profit.
Second-order effects
A shipment miss versus guidance can force more cautious near-term planning across Sony’s console supply chain and retail channel, even when the installed base continues to grow.
The result increases the importance of extracting revenue from the PS5 base rather than relying solely on unit-volume targets; Sony had previously reported higher second-quarter PS5 shipments alongside weaker operating profit.
Third-order effects
If hardware shipments increasingly normalize after a ramp period, Sony’s earnings profile will depend more on the balance between PlayStation monetization and the performance of non-gaming divisions.
The report reinforces that diversified consumer-electronics groups can post strong quarterly revenue while profitability is determined by uneven results across business lines.
The trend: Sony’s results are one data point in the shift from console availability-driven growth toward monetizing a larger installed base while managing more variable divisional profits.

It's worth noting that Sony did come off a record breaking sales period. I also speculate at least some people are holding off to buy a PS5 until pro releases (probably 10-20 percent of sales, maybe?) But yes, gaming industry is in a bit of a slump right now.
