This is the third step in a year-long build-out of Google's Physical Web push. Google opened the stack with Eddystone, its open-source, cross-platform Bluetooth LE beacon format in mid-2015, then proved the browser side on Apple turf when Chrome 44 for iOS brought beacon-powered Physical Web closer to reality.

What changes now is distribution at scale: Chrome 49 for Android turns every Android handset into a beacon receiver natively, building directly on the notification infrastructure Google shipped when eBay, Facebook, Pinterest, and Product Hunt became early adopters of Chrome notifications on Android.

First-order effects

  • Android users running the Chrome 49 beta start receiving notifications from nearby low-energy Bluetooth beacons without installing any app, while venues in Google's research pilot get browser-based reach to those handsets.
  • Beacon deployers who had been locked into per-platform SDKs can target both ecosystems through one open format, since Eddystone already runs cross-platform.
