Keybase started as a key directory trying to make public-key cryptography mainstream, backed by a $10.8M Series A led by a16z. The filesystem is its next step up the stack: instead of just mapping identities to keys, it now mounts an encrypted drive where sharing works because identities are already verified across services.

That identity-first approach is what separates it from standalone encrypted storage like Peerio's free desktop suite announced a year earlier — Keybase is betting that usable crypto comes from tying files to proven identities, not from another lockbox app.
