The stated rollout plan is aggressive: 500 kiosks running by July and 4,450 by 2020.

The bet matters because it turns dead payphone infrastructure into a citywide gigabit network funded without a subscription fee, and because New York's tech sector — now the largest US talent market per the related coverage — gives the city both the density and the political appetite to pull it off.
