@Meta reduces the age limit from 16 to 13 for @WhatsApp. Good decision. Why bury your head in the sand and pretend young people U-13 are not using it already? This keeps Meta congruent with reality.

@Livingstone_S ... Agreed - the discussion about them lowering the age limit is somewhat meaningless when there's no rigorous age assurance in place. Having worked with the team, can assure you this has been a rigorous investigation.

Anyone worried about Meta lowering the age at which kids can use WhatsApp to 13 are missing two key factors. 1) Young teens already use WhatsApp. It's one of the more popular choices 2) Encryption is vital to kids' safety. They need it even more than adults

Children as young as 9 being added against their will to WhatsApp groups encouraging & promoting self-harm. This disturbing investigation is part of a growing trend and underscores that @Ofcom need to urgently plug gaps in their #OnlineSafetyAct proposals https://www.bbc.com/...

Effective Regulation can't come soon enough. News today about WhatsApp lowering the UK age limit from 16 to 13, and this shocking story about the terrifying harms such messaging apps can create. https://www.bbc.com/...

Kids using WhatsApp is far less worrying than MPs using it.
  • @livingstone_s Sonia Livingstone on x
@_andyburrows @Ofcom Important concern - but it would be good to see the @BBC's #evidence. Also, as “Schools said pupils in Years 5 and 6 were being added to the groups,” surely at the problem is @WhatsApp's unreliable #ageassurance rather than a 13 vs 16 yr old #agelimit?
