Sources: Microsoft and OpenAI are planning a $100B data center project with a US-based supercomputer dubbed “Stargate” to power OpenAI's products

Executives at Microsoft and OpenAI have been drawing up plans for a data center project that would contain a supercomputer …

Are we already back to the anonymous single-source outlandish attention-seeking number leak not based on any numerical reality from the same company a month later?  Seriously?
  • @technicallymims Christopher Mims on threads
If Microsoft and OpenAI are really working on a data center for AI 100x bigger and 100x more expensive than a typical one, does that mean it's also going to use 100x more power?  Because that's going to be a problem...
  • @sung.kim.mw Sung Kim on threads
I saw a thread somewhere Microsoft literally can not place more than 100k gpus in a data center per state because it would impact the power infrastructure for that state.
  • @shiraovide Shira Ovide on threads
This is equivalent to about 4 years of Microsoft's cash spending on capital projects but for a single data center?
  • @sung.kim.mw Sung Kim on threads
Sam Altman has convinced Microsoft to spend $100B in his $7T project.  Only $6.9T to go.

5GW of power for a datacentre. That is like a city! Incidentally that is just under what Delhi city (17m population) consumes. (fwiw, the highest Delhi City has hit in recent times is 5.7GW on 12Jan24)

The opportunity cost of a $100 billion investment is considerable. What will be the environmental impact of Stargate?

breaking: Microsoft and OpenAI are drawing up plans for a $100 billion AI supercomputer The supercomputer, codenamed “Stargate,” would contain *millions* of GPUs and require several gigawatts of power Full story here w/ @amir for @theinformation: https://www.theinformation.com/ .…

Further indication that @openai and @microsoft are chasing the wrong architecture.
  • @iamadifuchs Adi Fuchs on x
If that's true, how much will producing and serving one model cost? This is in the ballpark of 100x more chips than the top AI supercomputers, so the power cost for training also goes up by 100x? Billion of dollars for every pre-training?
  • @nachristakis Nicholas A. Christakis on x
Cool name, despite the ominous echoes, and exciting time to be alive: Stargate.

This report comes a week after $AVGO suggested one of its clients (possibly $GOOG) is thinking about building an AI server cluster containing 1M+ accelerators within a few years. Total arms race among the hyperscalers for now.

Is this the monkey math: $100B datacenter at 30% margin requires ~$35B revs to earn 10% pretax ROIC. But 1) ratio of short vs long lived assets much higher and 2) computational intensity much higher, so margins prob lower. Means 10% ROIC prob requires well over $40B revs?

Microsoft-OpenAI is the new super-national entity of the upcoming decades. It will transcend the power and influence of most nations. We believe the AI supercomputer should be distributed and decentralized, mostly run on our own devices. That's why we are building @HyperspaceAI.
  • @pitdesi Sheel Mohnot on x
Microsoft and OpenAI are plotting a data center project with millions of specialized chips... costing up to $100B, financed by Microsoft It would have orders of magnitude more computing power than what MSFT currently supplies OpenAI, and could require 5 gigawatts of power [image]
  • @garymarcus Gary Marcus on x
Many people: Sure, LLM's still suck & they are brittle (lots of silly errors) but we haven't given them a fair shake because we have not yet spent $100B/$7T on them. Same people: We spent $1-2B on symbolic/neurosymbolic AI and they are brittle. Those ideas will never work. 🤔
  • @garymarcus Gary Marcus on x
When future historians look back at why AGI was so slow to materialize, the main thing they will dwell on is how intellectually myopic the field was in the GenAI era. Stunning lack of intellectual diversification.
  • @emostaque @emostaque on x
Not going to build a bigger supercomputer than these chaps. But you don't need to to build aligned AGI if you decentralize Swarm, collective intelligence will beat centralised collected intelligence

Can you feel the acceleration yet, anon?
  • @amir Amir Efrati on x
It's not “trillions” 🤣 but Stargate, also known as Phase 5 of the Microsoft-OpenAI joint plan on data centers, would move forward if OpenAI proves it can move the needle on GPT capabilities $msft [image]
