Amazon invests another $2.75B in Anthropic, the second tranche of its planned $4B investment in the AI startup, after investing $1.25B in September 2023

CNBC

Context & Ripple Effects

This payment completes the funding path Amazon outlined with its initial $1.25B minority investment in Anthropic in September 2023. It is an early step in a relationship that later expanded: Amazon’s cumulative investment reached $8B while it remained a minority investor without a board seat, and Anthropic made AWS its primary training partner.

First-order effects

  • Anthropic receives the remaining $2.75B of Amazon’s planned $4B commitment, strengthening its funding base while Amazon deepens a minority position rather than taking control.
  • Amazon gains greater economic exposure to Anthropic as the startup competes to build and deploy AI models; the immediate transaction does not alter the reported minority-investor structure.

Second-order effects

  • The investment gives Amazon a stronger incentive to turn Anthropic’s model development into cloud demand, a connection later formalized when Anthropic designated AWS as its primary training partner.
  • Rival cloud and platform companies face added pressure to pair capital with compute, chips, and distribution when courting leading AI model developers, rather than treating them solely as cloud customers.

Third-order effects

  • If such partnerships persist, frontier-model funding will increasingly be tied to long-term infrastructure commitments, concentrating AI workloads among the cloud providers able to finance both models and capacity.
  • The structure also leaves a durable governance question: large cloud investors can gain substantial commercial influence while remaining minority holders, as Amazon later remained without an Anthropic board seat.

The trend: This is an early example of AI infrastructure finance, in which cloud providers use strategic minority investments to secure demand for their computing ecosystems.

what they call venture capital these days... https://www.cnbc.com/... $2.75 billion investment in Anthropic, AI startup, by Amazon.  (How much is Anthropic spending on AWS I do wonder.) via @cnbc

@bgurley ... Amazon's filings and everyone's position has been that its cloud agreement with Anthropic is a separate agreement that we heard includes a commitment to spend, meaning it would be all cash that could be flowing back in part. https://www.forbes.com/... [image]

Amazon's total investment in Anthropic is $4B. While Amazon's largest outside investment ever, it is a minority stake without a board seat. Everyone's learning from Satya & Open AI. Expect more startups to fold like Inflection & Stability because the competition cost is too high …

As we reported in January, either party could trigger this bigger second tranche, but had to do so by end of Q1. Amazon confirms it's that in its release. This investment is a convertible note into Anthropic's next funding round, sources told us then. https://www.forbes.com/...

For anyone wondering about Amazon's seemingly big new $2.75B investment in Anthropic: this is not new; it's the lion's share of a $4B investment announced last fall. @DavidJeans2 and I broke down the unusual investment structure in January for @Forbes: https://www.forbes.com/... …

Amazon invested another $2.75B in Amazon Gift Cards into Anthropic, at an $18.4B valuation. Wondering if this quid pro quo should be regulated? I lean no, but something feels off about it to me [image]

Amazon sinks another $2.75 billion into Anthropic. The Big Tech firm has now invested $4 billion into the AI startup behind the Claude chatbot. Anthropic to Amazon as OpenAI is to Microsoft. https://www.cnbc.com/...

Amazon wrote Anthropic, a hot AI startup, another check. A big one. Roughly three Zappos' worth, for you longtime Amazon watchers: https://www.bloomberg.com/...

In other words, AI development in America is now certain to be controlled by the nation's biggest monopolists. I'm sure that will work out well for the American people. What could go wrong

Reminder: When Amazon initially invested in Anthropic in September it was a committed $1.25 billion with an agreement to invest “as much as $4 billion.” So this $2.75 billion is the remainder of that sum (there was a march deadline to commit the additional funds via convert)
