Robinhood launches Gold Card, a 3% cashback credit card for Robinhood Gold members, eight months after acquiring credit card startup X1 for $95M

crazy good deal for $50 annually Steve Moser / @stevemoser : I'm going to switch from using my Apple Card to the Robinhood Card since the Apple Card is 2% only on Apple Pay transactions and the Robinhood Card is 3% back on everything. It requires a $6 monthly fee but it's worth it if you spend more than $600 a month....

TechCrunch Mary Ann Azevedo

Context & Ripple Effects

Robinhood has been expanding Gold beyond its original premium trading features, adding Gold membership features and later cash-management services with debit access. The card extends that membership into everyday spending.

The launch also operationalizes Robinhood's $95 million X1 acquisition, turning a purchased card platform into a branded Gold benefit rather than leaving it as a standalone product.

First-order effects

  • Robinhood Gold members can now earn 3% cashback through a Robinhood-branded credit card, making Gold's membership fee easier to justify for users with substantial card spend.
  • Robinhood gains a direct consumer-credit product built on X1, while Apple Card faces a more aggressive rewards comparison among users deciding which card to make their default.

Second-order effects

  • The offer ties more of a Gold member's financial activity to Robinhood, potentially increasing the value of retaining the subscription beyond investing features alone.
  • Competing card issuers and finance apps may face pressure to differentiate on rewards, fees, or tighter integration with their own banking and investment products.

Third-order effects

  • If finance apps continue packaging cards, cash management, and investing under paid memberships, competition may shift from individual product features toward the breadth and economics of the customer relationship.
  • The model also raises the importance of whether rich card rewards can be sustained as a membership-acquisition tool, rather than merely used as a short-term incentive.

The trend: Brokerages are broadening into subscription-led financial platforms that use everyday payments to deepen customer engagement beyond trading.

I have never seen a card that gives 3% cash back on everything. This probably should be top of wallet for most of you. No annual fee (but requires RH Gold for $5/mo). $ back goes to brokerage so they make more $ there; still not sure how they make the math work.

Robinhood is back to its strength - great financial products that rethink the way they should work, giving most of the money directly back to customers, and incredible design and experience. Oh and great at launching too. Congrats team!

Fintech rebundling continues. Fintechs have commoditized yield (5% apy is everywhere). Is interchange next? 3% cash back on all the things. If banks can't offer yield and cant offer 3% cash back bc either breaks their business model how are they going to compete?

Robinhood paywalling its credit card by making it ONLY avail to those who pay $5/month for Robinhood “Gold.” Seems like a terrible cust acq strategy?

Another super cool feature: it will automatically liquidate your life savings if the SEC says something negative about credit cards
