Telegram rolls out its Peer-to-Peer Login Program, giving some Android users a Premium sub for volunteering their phone numbers to relay SMS OTPs to other users

Telegram is offering a new way to earn a premium subscription free of charge: all you have to do is volunteer your phone number …

The Verge Allison Johnson

Context & Ripple Effects

Telegram’s paid tier began as a feature bundle for a large messaging audience, following its 2022 Premium launch. The login initiative adds a non-cash route into that subscription: users can exchange participation in account-verification delivery for access.

It also sits uneasily alongside Telegram’s earlier support for anonymous phone-number-based sign-ups, underscoring how phone identity and reach remain operationally important even as the service offers ways to reduce reliance on a conventional SIM.

First-order effects

  • Eligible Android users can obtain Premium without paying cash by allowing their numbers to serve as SMS one-time-password relays.
  • Telegram gains a pool of user-supplied numbers for login-message delivery, while making Premium an incentive rather than solely a paid product.

Second-order effects

  • The program can reduce the marginal cost or availability constraints of SMS verification for Telegram, but it makes the quality and safety of participant enrollment central to login reliability.
  • Free Premium access creates some risk of substitution for the paid subscription, so Telegram will need participation benefits to produce more verification capacity than foregone subscription revenue.

Third-order effects

  • If replicated, consumer platforms may increasingly treat premium digital benefits as payment for user-provided infrastructure, data, or distribution rather than as a purely cash-priced bundle.
  • Authentication could become more dependent on managed networks of end-user intermediaries, increasing the importance of abuse controls and clear accountability when verification messages fail or are misused.

The trend: This is a data point in the broader shift toward platforms using subscription perks to mobilize users as contributors to operational infrastructure.

While @signalapp works to hide phone numbers, Telegram adds a new OTP feature that exposes phone numbers to strangers.

This is objectively terrible for users. It's a loss of privacy, a compromise of security and users have to foot the bill for SMS fraud. I'm genuinely not sure what telegram is cooking here, if you're in a high volume region, cut sms as MFA and enforce totp or webauthn.
