A look at the US DOJ's case against Apple, which has some strong points but also makes silly arguments, like Apple affecting “the flow of speech” via Apple TV+

DOJ lawsuit against Apple slammed over bizarre history of iPod success Kristijan Lucic / Android Headlines : The DOJ lawsuit “threatens who we are”, Apple says Berto Tordecilla / Investomania : Apple slammed with antitrust lawsuit over ‘illegal monopoly’ Sarvesh Mathi / MediaNama : Summary: US sues Apple for its illegal monopoly over smartphones Jon Brodkin / Ars Technica : Apple's green message bubbles draw wrath of US attorney general Connor Jewiss / iMore : “Buy your mom an iPhone”: Will these five words come to haunt Apple CEO Tim Cook? Probably not Threads: Alan Graham / @agraham999 : “Apple has similarly made it difficult for the iPhone to work with smartwatches other than its own Apple Watch, the government argued.  Once an iPhone user owns an Apple Watch it becomes far more costly for them to ditch the phone” The premise the Justice Department is working … Benedict Evans / @benedictevans : I am very curious to see the market definition that stands behind the DoJ's assertion that Apple has a smartphone monopoly.  It has maybe 80% of US teenagers, but only a little over half of the US installed base. Eric Benjamin Seufert / @eric_seufert : A cursory read of the DoJ's complaint: these issues are all fairly trivial, and addressing them wouldn't impact iOS' general market position.  Alternative app stores, sideloading, and the App Store commission aren't raised.  (1/X) Benedict Evans / @benedictevans : Interesting to hear the DoJ reference the failed interventions against AT&T and Microsoft as precedents for suing Apple.  Also, you keep saying ‘monopoly’.  You're going to have to work pretty hard to demonstrate that. Mastodon: Alex Guyot / @alex@mastodon.macstories.net : Jason's read the full DOJ complaint and has the best overview I've seen so far of what's being brought against Apple in this case: https://sixcolors.com/... @jsnell@zeppelin.flights : I didn't even mention the gigantic error in the filing where Steve Jobs is never introduced, just referred to as Jobs in the opening sinister anecdote X: Steven Sinofsky / @stevesi : The highlight is patently FALSE. Microsoft begged and pleaded for Apple to make iTunes available on Windows. The debate inside Apple about going to Windows is well-documented and establish by the people who debated. How can you take this case seriously? This is how AT people... [image] Joanna Stern / @joannastern : Oh yes, I'm remembering it now, Apple made Amazon use a dumb 3D screen and slow processor. It was the same day Apple made Microsoft acquire Nokia. Adan / @durreadan01 : This lawsuit is as cringe as lawsuits get. 💀 People are free to buy what they wanna buy. Yet they buy Apple products because they love the closed and refined experience offered. [image] Chance Miller / @chancehmiller : Yes, if you switch from iPhone to Android you ... have to learn how to use the Android interface? [image] M.G. Siegler / @mgsiegler : @markgurman Everyone knows that Apple made Amazon use that 3D tilt gimmick. Connor Jewiss / @connorjewiss : being successful means you get sued now apparently this suit is a big miss https://www.imore.com/... Steven Sinofsky / @stevesi : Quick Thoughts on DoJ v. Apple @mgsiegler “Honestly, it feels a bit like ChatGPT wrote some of these, just scanning a bunch of information and cramming bits together to make arguments. And really, that's undoubtedly a disservice to ChatGPT's capabilities.”... M.G. Siegler / @mgsiegler : A few quick thoughts the topic of the night in tech... 🧑‍⚖️🍏 https://spyglass.org/... @snazzylabs : Honestly, the DOJ's case seems pretty friggin' weak. There's absolutely some stuff Apple does that is anticompetitive and harmful to its own users, but I think Apple's gonna come out of this mostly unscathed. A few fines, a couple of small concessions, and that's it. Jon Fortt / @jonfortt : It's rather gutsy of the DOJ to describe $AAPL this way, considering I'm posting from a $429 iPhone SE. Apple's stifling innovation, overcharging, and somehow the free market can't address it. https://www.justice.gov/... [image] @om : I think regulator's both in the US and Europe actually need to ask the paying customers why they use Apple products. Also, my opinion of regulators hasn't changed. They are just trying to secure their post-government gig. 😂 Jason Williams / @_mrjasonw : @jsnell That was a really well-written article. Very matter-of-fact and not slanted in either direction. Much better than some of the hysterical takes that are floating around.
