Coinbase says all services on its website have been restored after a “display issue” on February 28 caused some users to see a zero balance in their account

Coinbase Global (COIN.O) said on Wednesday that all services on its website have been restored after an issue earlier …

Reuters

Context & Ripple Effects

Coinbase has previously acknowledged availability problems during stressed trading periods, including intermittent platform downtime during a sharp crypto decline in 2021 and warnings that services could degrade under high volume in 2017.

The latest incident was described as a display problem rather than a trading suspension or payment-processing error. That distinction matters, but the recurring record still makes account visibility and platform reliability central to Coinbase’s customer experience.

First-order effects

  • Users who saw incorrect zero balances regain normal website access and account visibility after Coinbase restored its services.
  • Coinbase must address the immediate trust impact of an interface that made holdings appear unavailable, even though it characterized the problem as a display issue.

Second-order effects

  • Repeated disruption episodes make reliability a more salient comparison point for customers choosing among crypto platforms, especially when market activity is elevated.
  • The incident adds pressure on Coinbase to demonstrate that customer-facing account data remains dependable under the same conditions that have previously produced degraded exchange services during high-volume periods.

Third-order effects

  • If such episodes continue, operational resilience—not only asset selection or trading features—could become a more durable component of exchange differentiation and customer retention.
  • The pattern points toward crypto platforms being judged more like critical financial infrastructure: accurate balances and continuous access become baseline expectations, while outages can weaken a platform’s moat.

The trend: Crypto exchanges are moving toward an infrastructure-resilience competition in which trustworthy real-time account access is part of the product itself.

Apps are now recovering. We had modeled a ~10x surge in traffic and load tested it. This exceeded that number. It's expensive to keep services over-provisioned, but we'll need to keep working on auto-scaling solutions, and killing any remaining bottlenecks. Thank you for...

Coinbase outages for the bull market are like the equivalent of a couple becoming “Facebook official” All the signs were there, and you had a hunch, but now its like official and publicly accepted. gm!

I heard Coinbase had an outage due to a traffic spike and just assumed it was because of a DDOS attack. It turns out Bitcoin is close to its all time high and FOMO is back. We didn't even have to wait for interest rates to fall back down to zero. [image]

@brian_armstrong Brian, there are exchanges that witness multiple of Coinbases traffic, providing spot, derivs, lending and a host of other services, and manage to operate seamlessly. Pay what needs to be paid.
