John Walker, a computer programmer and co-founder of 3D design software maker Autodesk, died on February 2 at the age of 75

Very sad news on the passing on John Walker, programmer and co-founder of AutoDesk. His contributions to our industry, the rise of the PC, and the modern industrialization of nearly everything were incredibly significant. I thought I would use some of John's own words to show the... [image]

John Walker, Autodesk founder, died. Few companies can claim to have as much impact on the evolution of personal computers as Autodesk has had. They reinvented entire industries. https://scanalyst.fourmilab.ch/ ...

A social media mutual dying is a sobering event for an aging generation. His aerospace paper made a mark on me: https://www.fourmilab.ch/...

    F. @Fourmilab , founder of AutoCAD, has passed. https://scanalyst.fourmilab.ch/ ... He was a mutual, and we swapped emails, and talked about startups and raising sheep (he also had had Icelandics). [image]

John Walker of @Fourmilab and @autodesk fame has died. John was an extraordinary programmer, engineer, entrepreneur, and friend, notoriously private, yet intensely transparent. John leaves behind a legacy that few can match. https://scanalyst.fourmilab.ch/ ...

Oh man. John was a great guy and a huge supporter of mine. The character John Walker in the Mammon books is named for him. Was really hoping to get him to BasedCon one of these days. 💔

“The Autodesk File” on John Walker's website chronicles the early days of Autodesk and the desktop CAD industry. I've spent many hours lost in there: https://www.fourmilab.ch/... (maybe time to save a copy)

This is a terrible shock. John had an incredible fund of aerospace knowledge, and he saved my most recent book from a major, plot-breaking error by suggesting a nuclear rocket technology that would solve it, which I never heard of before.

John Walker @Fourmilab, one of the founders of @Autodesk, passed away this week. He was brilliant, articulate and visionary. Without him, Autodesk would not exist. RIP.

The Autodesk File made a huge impact on me. I still clearly remember first reading it (as a PDF on a laptop screen!) about 20 years ago, in a couple of late-into-the-night sittings. So it goes.
