Apple’s California program has moved from a 27-vehicle test fleet in 2018 and disengagements reported about once per mile in 2019 to substantially more on-road testing. The 2023 mileage increase is therefore evidence of a maturing test operation, not by itself evidence of commercial readiness.

The gap with Waymo matters because California mileage disclosures make Apple’s pace comparable with a company already operating robotaxis without human monitors. Apple remains a significant but much smaller source of real-world autonomous-driving data in the state.
