Celsius emerges from bankruptcy and plans to distribute $3B+ to its creditors, who will also get a stake in the company's new Ionic Digital mining operation

The distribution will be made through PayPal and Coinbase.  —  Register Now  —  Celsius will be shipping out more than $3 billion …

CoinDesk Jesse Hamilton

Context & Ripple Effects

Celsius’s Chapter 11 filing began with a balance sheet showing both assets and liabilities in the $1B-to-$10B range, making creditor recovery the central question of the case. The company’s exit follows a court-approved plan to return most deposits and create a mining-and-staking successor business, a restructuring path approved in late 2023.

The recovery package also reflects the asset-sale process: the Fahrenheit-led bid won Celsius assets including loans, investments and liquid cryptocurrency, setting up the transaction that underpins the reorganization. This is the point at which that restructuring moves from court approval to creditor distribution.

First-order effects

  • Celsius creditors are set to receive more than $3 billion through PayPal and Coinbase, converting a long-running bankruptcy claim into an administered distribution process.
  • Creditors also become stakeholders in Ionic Digital, leaving them with exposure to the new mining operation rather than only a cash-and-crypto recovery.

Second-order effects

  • PayPal and Coinbase become key operational channels for a large creditor payout, putting execution, account access and asset delivery at the center of the recovery experience.
  • Ionic Digital begins with a creditor shareholder base, so its operating performance will directly affect the ultimate value realized by former Celsius customers beyond the initial distribution.

Third-order effects

  • The case reinforces a restructuring model in which distressed crypto platforms separate legacy creditor claims from a newly organized operating asset, here a mining business.
  • If repeated, creditor recoveries in crypto bankruptcies may increasingly combine liquid distributions with equity in successor companies—shifting more market and operating risk to creditors after court exit.

The trend: Crypto restructurings are evolving from simple asset liquidation toward hybrid recoveries that pair distributions with ownership in repurposed operating businesses.

If you are a #Celsius creditor outside the US and will be using Coinbase as your distribution agent, you can add an alternative email to your Celsius app for a smoother distribution. I'm not sure if this is also for US creditors using PayPal or Venmo?? [image]

Celsius last coin report and this waterfall have a $1.1B discrepancy in liquid crypto available for distributions. Likewise, Campagna said under oath there was $4.2B in allowed claims, but here it has $4.9B in claims. So where did the $700m in extra claims come from? And where...…

Celsius is finally paying people starting today. It could take 1-2 weeks for everyone to get their email and claim code, but this is great news!!
