Apptopia: WhatsApp's daily business users increased by 80% in the US in 2023 after a 122% jump in 2022, and daily users in the US grew by 9% in 2023

Context & Ripple Effects

WhatsApp had already built global scale, reaching 2 billion users worldwide by 2020, but its position in the US was less established than that global footprint suggested. The reported divergence between business and overall daily-user growth makes the US a meaningful test of whether WhatsApp can deepen usage through commercial conversations rather than consumer adoption alone.

The acceleration also fits WhatsApp’s subsequent shift toward paid business messaging products for larger companies. It follows a period in which privacy-policy changes helped create an opening for alternative messaging apps, including sharp download growth at Telegram and Signal.

First-order effects

  • WhatsApp’s US business audience became substantially more active in 2023, far outpacing the growth rate of its overall US daily audience.
  • For Meta, the result strengthens the case for prioritizing business-facing WhatsApp workflows in the US, where incremental consumer growth was comparatively modest.

Second-order effects

  • Businesses and customer-service providers using messaging gain a stronger reason to treat WhatsApp as a US customer-contact channel, increasing the importance of implementation and operational support around those conversations.
  • Competing messaging services face a clearer need to distinguish their business tools or privacy proposition as WhatsApp’s commercial usage grows faster than its general audience.

Third-order effects

  • If business engagement continues to outpace consumer growth, messaging competition may increasingly turn on business communication infrastructure and execution rather than on consumer sign-ups alone.
  • That shift could make a large installed messaging base more economically valuable through business services, while raising the stakes for trust and privacy when commercial messaging expands.

The trend: Messaging platforms are seeking to convert mature consumer reach into higher-value business communication activity, with operational tooling becoming a key differentiator.

Pssst.  You can LIE.  As long you're not trying to impersonate someone else or anything creepy like that, no one cares.  And your profit picture can be a pet or a sunset or whatever else you want, so I never gave FB my real name or picture and didn't put many identifying details …

Of course, some people are at higher risk, but really everyone is at risk.  From FB and others, ahem, securely protecting your information (DL, passport, etc...) and so forth.  I am a male.  I have worked in countries where having personal information not only saved somewhere …

So Apple may have ended up shooting itself in the foot with its lock-in attempts with imessage.

A proper iPad app is looooong over due too!  It's time @whatsapp.  And yes I know I can login via the browser...but native apps FTW!

They didn't get on board with RCS soon enough

I think that would cause them too much trouble, especially in the EU.  Just look all the trouble they went through to release Threads in the EU.

Apple let it happen.  They refused to dominate the messaging market, allowing others like WhatsApp and Telegram to thrive!

WhatsApp is having a big moment in the U.S. All of my iOS family is on Telegram.  All of my iOS friends are on WhatsApp.  I'd like to put my family onto Signal instead, but Telegram was the majority's choice

It's prime time for Meta to make @whatsapp the singlular messaging app within its entire platform/metaverse, including @threads, @instagram, and @facebook.  Stovepiping DMs is not efficient.

@whatsapp is Finally Starting to Dominate in the United States.  The leading global messaging app is having its breakout moment in the U.S. with some help from Tim Cook and a bit of planning.  Here's Why.  Smart observations from @alexkantrowitz

Basically any time someone joins a group who has an Android we move to WhatsApp. I now have tons of people who (I think) have iPhones but they just use WhatsApp as default as you don't need to think “is this an Android with limited messaging capabilities and the green bubble”

@GergelyOrosz Everybody in Latam knows that WhatsApp has already won this battle, and it's not even close. South America runs on WhatsApp.

Why WhatsApp is taking off in the U.S. > Help from Apple > Parent groups at school > International travel > Businesses on board > Social media energy moving to social media > Meta is pushing it My latest on @BigTechnology https://www.bigtechnology.com/ ...

It would be amusing if WhatsApp overtook iMessage because Apple refuses to bring first-class messaging support for Android. Class play by WhatsApp / Meta, taking advantage of Apple being Apple. (I use WhatsApp about as much as iMessage, but my WhatsApp usage grows faster)
