The hosting picture complicates the fediverse’s decentralization narrative. ActivityPub was gaining prominence as a protocol for Twitter alternatives in the earlier rise of ActivityPub-powered social services, while Mastodon and other decentralized networks were already attracting users amid dissatisfaction with major platforms in the prior decentralized-social surge.
