Sources: TikTok aims to grow TikTok Shop US' merchandise volume tenfold to $17.5B in 2024 and plans to launch TikTok Shop in Latin America in the coming months

- ByeDance's video app is fast expanding beyond advertising … The 2024 merchandise volume goal for the US version of TikTok Shop

Bloomberg

Context & Ripple Effects

TikTok’s commerce push had progressed from creator-linked shopping tools to aggressive GMV targets, including a $20B global GMV goal for 2023 after rapid Southeast Asian growth. The US plan pairs a much larger sales ambition with a prospective Latin American rollout, signaling that Shop is being treated as a core business beyond advertising.

The strategy also follows TikTok’s reported effort to keep shopping transactions inside TikTok Shop rather than external retail links, making scale in its own checkout and merchant ecosystem especially important.

First-order effects

  • TikTok Shop US must rapidly expand merchant supply, transaction volume, and operational capacity to pursue $17.5B in 2024 merchandise volume.
  • A Latin American launch would extend TikTok Shop’s merchant and consumer footprint into another regional market in the coming months.

Second-order effects

  • US sellers and creators gain stronger incentives to use TikTok-native storefronts and affiliate commerce as TikTok concentrates shopping activity inside its platform.
  • Amazon and other e-commerce destinations face a more assertive TikTok distribution channel, particularly if TikTok continues limiting outbound shopping links.

Third-order effects

  • If execution matches the ambition, short-form video platforms could increasingly control both product discovery and transaction capture rather than merely referring shoppers to retailers.
  • The later shortfall against the $17.5B target underscores that turning audience reach into durable commerce volume remains operationally difficult, even as platforms pursue vertical integration.

The trend: TikTok Shop is part of the broader shift from social-media advertising toward vertically integrated, creator-led commerce platforms that own discovery, checkout, and merchant relationships.

#TikTok needs to be banned in US as it bites into profits of US companies. Apart from economic prudence, we need to act urgently on the social & emotional damage it is wreaking on American youth. It is sowing unprecedented division between various groups & https://www.bloomberg.c…

Hopefully they'll also stop making every other video in my feed a TikTok Shop promo

TikTok Shops is going to charge ~5% over the payment processing fees (8% total) This was bound to happen and in line with general commerce platform revenue mechanisms. The big Q is whether the performance is strong enough to allow for this to be used as a scaled channel.

@herrmanndigital 😂 and people thought they were a threat to Amazon.

@herrmanndigital I like how they word it - we're going to increase it to 8% on July 1, but to help you transition we're going to increase it to 6% on April 1....like what if you don't need the help can you opt out of that?

So TikTok Shops is about to take 8% referral fee to run on TikTok Shops. This is insane. Am I reading this right? [image]

@herrmanndigital This is the same bait and switch Meta will do with Shops. Remember they wanted to charge 5%, nobody adopted it, and then waived it. Rest assured it will be back. Sucks merchants don't strategize together. (1/2)

TikTok powered early growth in its U.S. shopping service by offering low sellers' fees and footing the bill for deep discounts. But that free ride is quickly coming to an end as it drastically hikes fees. First scoop of 2024 w/ @anngehan @theinformation https://www.theinformation…
